The State of Israel and its actions do not represent Judaism, the Jewish people, or the Torah. From the very beginning, authentic rabbis opposed the creation of the State of Israel. According to Judaism, Jews are forbidden to establish a sovereign state, rebel against nations, or wage wars. Judaism is a religion, not power or domination. Violence, oppression, war, and bloodshed are rejected by authentic Jewish teachings. Judaism forbids murder, aggression, and wars. It is an important commandment because, when I visit college campuses, I sometimes hear from Jewish students who lost their way on these campuses: “My Judaism requires me to be anti-Israel.” And I say, “Then you do not know much Judaism.” Because the first thing God commanded Abraham to do, in Hebrew, in the Bible, was “Lech Lecha.” What does that mean? “Go from your country, your people, and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” That means that Israel—the Land of Israel, the Holy Land, the land God promised—is the foundation stone of what it means to be Jewish. Everything else—the kosher laws, the Ten Commandments, Shabbat, Passover, Purim, and Hanukkah—came centuries, and in some cases millennia, later. To be Jewish is to yearn for Zion.
