“Once you’ve seen one total eclipse, you want to see another,” says Dr Mason. “They become incredibly addictive. This is number 22 for me, and every one is different.” The skies were overcast for Dr Mason’s first total solar eclipse in the Philippines in 1988. Since then he has devoted many hours to studying weather patterns and microclimates ahead of each solar eclipse. He concluded that Burgos was the ideal base for the event for the highest probability of clear skies. “There’ll be a lot of beautiful twilight colours, a lot of lighting effects, maybe atmospheric effects that we’re seeing because the sun is low down in the sky,” he says. I’m also very happy to see my project featured in Datawrapper’s Dispatch, alongside wonderful work from Reuters and The New York Times — teams whose work I’ve admired for years. It’s a real honor to be in such company. Over the past few days, I’ve made a lot of improvements to my Solar Eclipse Atlas. I’m especially grateful to Ernie Wright, a lead visualization specialist at NASA, who took the time to review the project and suggest a small but important improvement. I’ve already implemented it, making the visualization of eclipse paths more accurate. I’ve also added a new feature to the city view. You can now hover over any eclipse and see how it actually unfolded in the sky: how the Moon moved across the Sun, or how it will move during a future eclipse.
