Uh guys, how tf is there not an emergency shut off valve. That fuel spray just created a generation of Bosnian birth defect mutants.

Let me tell you that it can go a lot fucking worse when the hose disconnects from the tanker while still hooked up to the receiving aircraft. The hose beats the aircraft to death and landing on a carrier is tricky, because that hose is going to be a flightdeck threat.

The dreaded "sine wave". Hard hit, push slack into it, wave goes up hose, wave goes down hose, wham!!!

Tanking from a basket is tough in the Tomcat. Especially from the metal KC-135 basket at night, while in the clouds, with three other F-14s behind you all sucking on fumes! There’s lots of pressure while just taking a couple of thousand pounds in order to let everyone cycle through before someone flamed-out. Low state always gets gas first, until everyone finally gets what they need. I don’t miss those nights!

No shut off switch? So the guy running the tanker just laying they watching fuel spray all over? And the F14 just flys like like nothing going on and flys into the fuel.

I think coupling created slack in hose pipe that had to be reeled back by refuelling pod that it perhaps failed to do so. The sine wave was introduced in hose which whipped & snapped the bucket.

Took a while to cut the hose loose, or is that normal?

You'd think a critical operation like this would demand that the fuel hose was inspected and replaced on a regular interval for safety reasons.

Serious question? What spills is fuel, right? That will not hurt anyone who walks around and causes them to do so, or is it in a safe test area?

There's baptism by fire. And there's this - baptism by fear. Seeing a Tomcat on your 6 can do that. Even tankers.
