California Democratic gubernatorial front-runner Xavier Becerra went viral yesterday for saying to a local Los Angeles television (KTLA) reporter, after she asked a hard question, “By the way, this is a profile piece, this is not a gotcha piece, right?” Reporter Annie Rose Ramos responded, appropriately, “These questions are fair. It’s in order to learn about you as a candidate.” Progressives responded by criticizing Becerra’s messaging. A progressive Pod Save America co-host and former Obama spokesman, posted on X, “Politicians and candidates…let your staff have these whiny conversations! Or at least don’t do it on camera!” Former Obama strategist David Axelrod wrote that Becerra, as HHS Secretary during COVID, “rarely was the administration’s point person in communicating to the American people on the pandemic,” adding that the KTLA exchange “may be the reason why.” But the underlying problem is not that Becerra is a poor communicator but rather that he is the person responsible for losing 85,000 migrant children under Biden’s open borders policy, which was what KTLA’s Ramos asked about. When Becerra was Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), its Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) could not reach more than 85,000 unaccompanied children after releasing them to sponsors. Eleven ORR managers warned in a July 2021 memo that labor trafficking was rising and that the system “rewards individuals for making quick releases, and not one that rewards individuals for preventing unsafe releases.” The New York Times found 13-year-olds working in meat plants, 12-year-olds at Hyundai and Kia supplier factories, and children who should have been in middle school working at commercial bakeries. And Becerra’s claim that exploitation happened only after children left HHS custody omits that HHS itself had loosened the sponsor vetting designed to prevent exploitation. The agency under his leadership shortened required document checks and waived in-person home studies in many cases. And HHS waived background checks, including sex offender and child abuse registry checks, for sponsors and other adults in households where children were placed. Digital fingerprinting to confirm sponsor identities dropped by 55 percent under Becerra, and at least 30,000 minors were placed with sponsors HHS knew were unrelated to them. A Florida statewide grand jury documented cases where one Austin, Texas household received more than 100 children, another Texas address received 44, and a third received 25. At a staff meeting, Becerra said, in a video, “If Henry Ford had seen this in his plants, he would have never become famous and rich. This is not the way you do an assembly line.” That remark came weeks after the July 2021 memo from 11 ORR managers complaining that the office “rewards individuals for making quick releases.” Becerra told ORR Director Cindy Huang during a March 2022 call that if she could not increase the number of discharges, “he would find someone who could,” according to five people who described the call to the Times. Huang resigned a month later. Becerra made a similar threat to her successor, according to several people present at the meeting. At least five HHS staff members filed complaints, alleging they were pushed out after raising concerns about child safety. How do you go about finding such dynamic young actors, and why do you often put these young people at the center of each one of your stories? Koreeda: First of all, I would say that I tend to make what I would call family dramas, and of course, you have to have children if you’re creating a family, but that’s how it started, but I found that as I did it, I became really interested. It became very interesting and fun to work with these children, and for example, the two children in this film, neither of them had any acting experience at all before this film. I brought them in, and what I find when you bring these children in, and you work with them is that the adult actors change. They become much more lively and natural in the way that they act, and I guess, at some point, I realized this, and I guess, became really attracted to the idea of having children and the impact that it had. Interviewer: Do you find that there is any struggle in terms of working with young actors, or in this case, young children who have not actually acted before? Koreeda: Just to clarify, I have worked with children in many of my films, and all of them have never had experienced before. I always go out and pick non-acting children to work in my films, so just, I wanted to put that out there. In terms of the struggle, it does take time. You have to give extra time to work with these children. When I choose these children, I have an audition, and I pick out who I want to the audition, and then when we get to set, I never give them the script.
