It's like @ylecun defining why Bittensor will gather all the AI at the end. It's now more about talentisim than capitalism!

Open Source triumphs represents the collective brilliance of humanity, where the best ideas emerge. If we share knowledge, society flourishes, while monopolization poses a threat. They may have bought the political system, but technology remains a sanctuary for ingenuity they lack

Thanks for sharing and good to finally see people bringing up the historical context of open source. @halvarian’s theory about core’s and compliments from ‘98 deserves a revisit. Interesting fact in the actual context is that he is the chief economist at google which means the recently leaked note was based on 30 yr old knowledge. The open source genie in the bottle is out there and is here to stay! Wrote about this 1yr ago in my newsletter: @ylecun

Exactly, also it avoids market-capture and the natural incentive to stop or slow innovation when you do that. Why would a monopoly or oligopoly want true innovation? They would want to collect profit, and jot spend on R/D, they'll go for rent-collecting.

What a cherry picking. Facebook or Windows aren't open sourced, unlike alternatives, and still they have the upper hand in their own market segment.

I think this is a recent phenomena. Open Source was laughed at not too long ago.

@huggingface But there is a big problem, most of open models are more difficult to execute or fine tune compared to commercial ones. And I'm exclusively talking about LLMs.

💯

so we are throwing words like "always" left and right now? Clearly, there are projects like Google which has a monopoly and its not open-source

@jimmygunawanapp Except when it doesn’t, which by market share across all industries is > 75% of the time. Ideas are cheap and easy to come by. It’s execution that matters. Other than Linux dominating a few OS segments there are no examples of open source domination.

Money matters and “they” will censor any open source tech of real value. “But how can they censor open source code?!”🤭 I’m pretty sure there is no major open source library that hasn’t been majorly funded by a big org.

Network effects!
