We learned about ChatGPT on Twitter.” 😱 “Sam didn't inform the board that he owned the OpenAI startup fund.” My two cents: This was inexcusable behavior on Sam's part, the old board was right to fire him, and the new board should fire him again.

MIT-trained journalist Karen Hao interviewed over 300 people for her book Empire of AI, including 90+ current and former OpenAI insiders. She got the firing story scene by scene from people in the room. Ilya Sutskever was OpenAI's chief scientist and co-founder. He cared about two things: building AGI, and building it safely.
