The Reagan administration tripled the national debt, gave immunity to vaccine manufacturers, passed an automatic weapons ban, presided over the Iran-Contra scandal, and gave amnesty to 2.7 million illegals. But, while all of these things are varying degrees of bad, none of them actually caused irreparable or irreversible harm to the country. And, in hindsight, they kind of pale in comparison to many things that have happened since then. What was his greatest sin, then? It's actually something far more damaging and insidious than amnesty: it was the attitude and value system he sold subsequent to the amnesty--an attitude and value system that has destroyed our national conscience and self-identity. It transformed how we thought of America, and what it means to be an American. And it's this attitude that has rolled out the red carpet for the fundamental transformation of America. Listen to him invoke the now-clichéd "Statue of Liberty" vision of immigration. Watch him use the "threat" of global communism as an excuse to open America up as a "place of refuge" for all peoples of the world. Hear him paint a picture of a multicultural America. Watch how he sells the ideas of "freedom" and "liberty" as the fundamental defining aspects and organizing principles of what it means to be an American. This was Reagan's greatest sin: he convinced Americans that America was just a set of ideas and that anyone from anywhere in the world can come live here and become an American. This was a radical departure from hundreds of years of established American thought about our identity and heritage. Reagan used his "Great Communicator" skills to sell to America this wholly new vision of America. He transformed--in the hearts of minds of Americans--"what" America is, and "who" Americans even are. And it is this new generic non-identity that has disarmed the ability of Americans to resist the mass waves of immigration into America, the transformation of the American demographic, the destruction of the founding demographic, and the replacement of American workers with foreign labor. It solidified in the minds of Americans the lie that we are a multicultural, multiracial country--and that we were never anything else. And that to oppose immigration in any way other than whether it's "legal or illegal" is racist, xenophobic, hateful and un-American. Americans are powerless to stop the destructive transformation of America because they no longer believe in the founding narrative and identity of America. They believe a lie. And now America is becoming that lie.
