Optional or not: I hate companies who hurt their consumers. Introducing custody for a hardware wallet company is a no go. F* Ledger.

@Ledger I don't get it. Its optional. Ledger is trying to get customers who are scared of losing their passphrase by offering them another option. I have a ledger - I will not be using this option. I am as safe as I was before it was an option. Am I missing something?

@Ledger As long as you don’t opt in their new service you are fine. For me personally, I don’t want to support hardware companies who wanna make a quick buck with people innocent enough to use their new ID-based recovery service.

@Ledger I already bought their device - use it or not I don't think they get any further financial benefit so destroying it just seems to hurt me (to the cost of an alternative device). If it hits their sales of new devices badly then I guess they will withdraw the service.

@CarlBMenger @Ledger But if I don't give it permission its a cold wallet right? I am not OK with a Hot Wallet as my permanent store - I just store $BTC on it and only send to and from my hot wallet (Exodus as it happens).

@CarlBMenger @Ledger We don't know because the source code is closed. For all we know it always had the ability to send your key over the USB port and it doesn't need permission to do it all the time. If you're not ok with your keys being on a hot device you should switch, Ledger is a hot device.

@KupandaTwelve I have different passphrases. I don't like coldcard because it is too long with the keyboard and if you memorize them on the sim card, it is an added problem. Ledger was also a disaster. Trezor is great for it. So my question is basically: how do you switch from one to another?

@KupandaTwelve Either you start from 0 by setting up a new privat seed and write down those 24 words and send the funds to your new address or you put in your existing privat key.

@Ledger Just a reminder, it's not good enough to destroy an HD wallet. Reminds me of the scenes in movies where people shoot the computer monitor to "disable" it (psst, everything is on the hard drive). You have to create new keys and address(es) and transfer all your coins to it(them).

@CarlBMenger @Ledger But not all hardware wallets need to comply. There are open source options like Seed signer, cold card, and foundation. Im building my out HW soon. There will always be options out there.

Now we know the motivation. The fee for this recovery service is $9.99 a month. I would never enable this feature and I am not pleased that it even exists as an option. That brings up another concern - are they doing this without permission. Geez, the greed.

@Ledger Lol you smashed an old Nano S which is not compaitable with the recover feature, why lol? It only impacts the X and S plus.
