Trading For Locals: Today, we returned to Marabastad to fulfill a promise we made to build infrastructure for informal traders. We are building 60 stalls in this area that’s adjacent to the Tshwane Retail Market. The Market Stalls will be occupied and used by Tshwane residents. We made a commitment that trading in this city will be locals and legally registered traders. The stalls will accommodate three restaurants, to be utilised by local women following a request from the community. In addition, they’ll be 62 trading stalls for fruit and vegetable vendors. The stalls are located adjacent to the Tshwane Retail Market to enable the expansion of trade in the area. We expect the stalls will be ready in October 2026. The murders at Marry Me wouldn’t have happened had we as a government done our jobs to protect and safe guard our communities. When enforcement officers take action, some traders resort to theatrics to portray themselves as victims. Others have gone as far as hiring persons with disabilities and using children, knowing that enforcement actions against them are more challenging. Let it be clear order must be upheld, and enforcement will apply to everyone, without exception. The law is clear: hawkers are not allowed to operate on main corridors, obstructing pedestrian walkways. Designated backstreets are available, and trading is only permitted from 4 PM to 10 PM. The trending video showing our officers rescuing a child after the mother fled is just another example of the tactics used to manipulate public sentiment and justify illegal operations in the CBD. Our commitment remains firm ensuring a clean, organized, and law-abiding city. You may hate me now as i move around telling hawkers do the right thing, but one day, you will celebrate the work we are doing.
