Orthodox Christianity’s Holy Fire Ceremony is always a special experience. More so this year after holy sites were shut, under attack from Iran. Back to normal happens quickly in Israel. Inspirational. Spiritual.

Israeli forces were seen violently assaulting Christian worshippers in Jerusalem during Holy Saturday celebrations at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, one of Christianity’s holiest sites. Footage shows officers striking attendees, shoving crowds, and detaining multiple people as they attempted to reach the ceremony. Israeli police imposed heavy restrictions across the Old City while crowds tried to reach the church. Several worshippers were reportedly beaten and arrested, and youth groups taking part in the celebrations were also struck by police and had flags confiscated during the procession. The violence unfolded during the traditional Holy Fire ceremony, an event that draws thousands of Christians each year to Jerusalem’s Old City. Church observers and local Christians say the scenes reflect growing pressure and restrictions on freedom of religion in Jerusalem.
