#OTD in 1975: a General Dynamics prototype YF-16 [72-1568] crash lands in Texas (US). Test pilot Neil Anderson made a wheels-up landing in a grassy area along the runway after he reported landing gear problems. He was unhurt, jet rebuilt, and testing program continued.

Japanese F-15J fighter jet made an emergency landing at Naha Airport in Okinawa after its left landing gear failed while returning from a scramble intercept mission. The aircraft skidded, rotated 180°, and came to rest with its left wing touching the runway. The pilot exited unharmed.

A WB-57F “Canberra” Long-Range High-Altitude Research Aircraft with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) made a gear-up landing this morning at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base in Houston, Texas, at around 11:30 a.m., following a reported “mechanical issue” which caused a serious malfunction and failure in the landing gear of the WB-57F.

The aircraft, F-15J 22-8809 of the 304th Tactical Fighter Squadron (304 Hikotai), skidded on the runway, rotated approximately 180 degrees, and came to rest with its left wing touching the runway. Fortunately, the pilot was not harmed and exited the aircraft safely.

A320 nose gear steering ops test after we replaced the actuator and did the rigging. You saw what happened with that Iberia A320 in Split a few days ago... nose wheels locked almost 90 degrees after landing and the aircraft was stuck on the runway. This is exactly the kind of test they will do after they replace the actuator and finish the rigging on that one.

The incident came within hours as 179 people were killed when a Boeing 737-800 crashed in South Korea. “The plane started to sit at about a 20-degree angle to the left and, as that happened, we heard a pretty loud, what almost sounded like a crash sound, as the wing of the plane started to skid along the pavement, along with what I presume was the engine,” a passenger told CBC News. The Air Canada flight landed with zero fatalities, only minor injuries. Both incidents had apparent landing gear failure.

WATCH: The pilot and co-pilot of a G200 executive jet were killed following an accident at La Romana International Airport. The aircraft, which had departed for Austin, Texas, reported technical problems and declared an emergency approximately 16 nautical miles southwest of La Romana. The aircraft attempted to return to the airport but crashed before completing the emergency landing. No passengers were on board. The Aviation Accident Investigation Commission is currently investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the crash.

35 years ago today: the first Osprey crashes June 11 1991: a prototype V-22 Osprey [163915] crashes while testing in Delaware (US). Both crew survive. While the rotorcraft was hovering, the left nacelle struck ground, bouncing and catching fire. This was the first of a controversial series of accidents involving the Osprey´s development program.
