Dear Paul, Put your animus around Islam aside for a second, and please kindly consider the below rationally: If you look up ‘urf (custom) as a source of Islamic jurisprudential rulings (well accepted in all traditional scholarship) and if you understand that the minimum age of *marriage* in shariah (not unmarried teenage promiscuity, as happens today) is left to be determined by the custom (‘urf) of the age one lives in, due to the shariah’s deferral of this issue to society, then you can understand how what was customary for desert bedouins then (as it was for people across the West up until a couple of hundred years ago) is no longer acceptable for us now, and why shariah left the age of *marriage* (again, not trafficking & sexual exploitation) to be determined by the ‘urf (custom) of the age one lives in. This deferral to custom makes far more sense than Shariah stipulating an eternal, arbitrary fixed number (as the protagonist is arguing would be logical here). Otherwise think about it, what would that fixed number be, for all eternity, and why that one in particular? Therefore, this is not so much evidence for a “mistake” in a perfect God, than it is evidence that Islam left the topic open for each society in every age to determine for itself. This is also reconcilable with the fact that even until today the age of consent is determined by each society, due by its own customs (‘urf), which is why the age of consent still differs from country to country, even today. In short, Islam ruled that we must follow the law, wherever we are & whatever time we are in, on this issue. That Muslim chap didn’t know how to respond because he’s under-informed about Islam, and perhaps he’s also approaching the topic as a literalist Muslim polemicist, who are mostly their own worst enemy in debates. Finally, debates with those who have no intention of dialogue are always useless. This is why they’re best avoided. Thanks for reading & considering.
