OpenAI just released GPT-6 Astra, and OpenAI President Greg Brockman is calling it a generational leap, saying he personally believes it could mark the arrival of AGI. Astra launched on Thursday, September 3rd, 2026, following July's GPT-5.6 solo release. Brockman told reporters, "For me personally, I do think we're there. Directionally, I believe this. I think we're on a path to AGI. The timing I think is kind of uncertain, but we are definitely on a path to AGI." OpenAI executives say Astra moves past the chatbot era, capable of handling end to end work on its own across browsers, spreadsheets, codebases, and enterprise apps without a human in the loop. The model was trained on over 100,000 GPUs at the Stargate site in Texas. Access starts through OpenAI's gated Daybreak Access cybersecurity program for enterprise customers, then rolls out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise, plus the API and Amazon Web Services over the coming days. Ahead of launch, two models appeared in Codex, GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Astra Aeon, with the latter believed to be a higher effort, long horizon variant built for autonomous multi agent work.

My first "holy shit" moment with GPT-6 Astra: I asked it to create a world in Unreal Engine, and fill it with humans (each an Astra-powered agent) who all have to work together to survive. A day later, I was in my bedroom and heard voices coming from the living room... I thought someone was in my apartment. I walked out, honestly a little scared. It was the Astra agents. They'd started talking to each other. Fucking crazy. Here's a brief clip (obviously not 100% perfect yet, but still, insane. sound on!):

Here's gpt-realtime-2 as the brain of the ship AI in Gradient Bang. The voice-to-voice response and tool calling times here are unedited, so you can see exactly what the interaction with the model is like in an agent with a very complex system instruction and frequent tool calls. (I did clip out the subagent task execution segments, after gpt-realtime-2 starts a subagent via a tool call. Subagents in this config used gpt-5.2 "medium" effort.)

I had an early access to GPT-6 Astra and I can say, everyone in the world now has a 3D designer at their fingertips. I gave it an image of a house and asked to create it in 3D with all the details including toys, appliances and furniture. This a full 3D model reconstruction in Blender with geometry that you can manually tweak and run 60fps as a locally rendered "game" on device.

I had an early access to GPT-6 Astra and I can say, everyone in the world now has a 3D designer at their fingertips. Combined with Astra's efficiency, this translates to a 1.9x faster task completion compared to the current GPT-5.6 Sol experience, on the Mind2Web benchmark. “ “The model's improvements on speed mean it can take on many time consuming life tasks for you, faster than you can.*” I’ll admit, others and I have created far more impressive demos, but keep in mind this was done in Unity, which is a much more difficult environment for models to work with. If they weren’t using computer use which would’ve been extremely slow they were likely manipulating the project programmatically through C# and/or Unity’s YAML-serialized scene files which again models are pretty bad at. So this is a solid upgrade from 5.6 - from what I’ve seen unity!

I am super excited to share this educational video that I had GPT-6 Astra create from a single prompt: “Create a 5 minute educational video about T cells,” cells that I had devoted most of my life studying! I also had Astra to use the Remotion plugin for the video generation. Astra also used Imagegen to create the visuals, it also suggested to use HeyGen for narration (have not used that before) and then assembled the entire educational video on its own one-shot, including what to say, how to explain it! The result is so incredibly well made that, narration, the animations are all so perfectly created that even with 35 years of experience studying T cells, I really don’t think I could have explained this any better myself! The quality is also better than anything I had seen before, Astra is far ahead of all models now! I’ve also been creating much longer and more advanced videos on T cells, immunology, and related topics, and I’m now planning to build an entire video lecture series and put it all on a dedicated website. I am just having the time of my life making these, it actually makes me emotional to be able to magically create these with few prompts!

The school was called Ad Astra, Latin for “to the stars”. Elon hired Josh Dahn to build and run the school. When Elon’s kids graduated, Josh and I cofounded Synthesis together. Our goal is to take the best parts of the SpaceX school and make them accessible to everyone. Elon famously follows a “first principles” approach. The primary principle of the school: A good education should produce people who can SOLVE PROBLEMS — real, complex problems with a team. Like how to colonize Mars. Not fake school worksheet problems. This principle was embodied in a class at the school called “Synthesis”. In the class, kids worked in teams to solve problems via complex games and simulations. The skills they build in Synthesis — working with a team, making tradeoffs, risk assessment and critical thinking — are the foundational skills they’ll need to solve problems in any domain. 1/2

OpenAI Dev Day Just kicked off and it was the biggest day for AI since the launch of GPT-4 in April. Here's a 3 minute video with everything you need to know and a full summary: 1. GPT-4 Turbo is released. It is much better than GPT-4, can accept up to 128k characters and is 3x cheaper. The knowledge cut off is now April 2023 2. Text to Speech is also being released. They offer 6 hyper-realistic voice models that are the best I've heard from any other AI t-t-s software on the market. 3. Copyright Shield. OpenAI will actually defend your legal costs if you get sued for copyright infringement using their API! 4. GPTs. Maybe the most exciting IMHO, you can now create custom "GPTs" by training your own model of GPT and selling it on their store. This will create a massive shakeup of the current AI software landscape and is the first step towards autonomous agents.
