Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar says Chinese open source models pose a "threat to American Prosperity": "These Chinese open source models are really the result of distillation attacks." "Most of this is just stolen American IP from frontier labs, and I think the frontier labs should do more to protect that IP, and that's in their own economic interest." "The gravest threat to us is not homicide, it's suicide." "It's an inability to turn these tokens into economic value and generate American prosperity for it." "You see that with the proposed moratorium in New York on data centers. Turning our back on AI would be as consequential a mistake as turning our back on the atom in the '70s." To enable this, we are working on: - Blue-sky research on continual learning, the science of RL, and how models learn across their full lifecycle, with every experiment and recipe shared openly. - The BaseHub Data Foundry: the highest-quality open RL environments, training data, and real-world benchmarks, built for anyone to train and benchmark on. - Post-post training: taking open-source models and making them better, safer, and more aligned through continual post-training, built on our research, and deployed with our frontier safety stack so organizations can use open-source models with confidence. - Making models cheaper and more performant through our model performance research. This is a mission-driven research effort, not a commercial product. We believe the health of the open-source AI ecosystem matters and that the best way to advance it is to do science in the open. We’re hiring engineers, researchers, and research fellows to advance this mission.

China is trying to pop the US AI bubble. Xi just announced China will provide 30 countries with 5,000 AI training and seminar opportunities while building international AI application cooperation centers. China and the US have a different definition of "winning" the AI race. The US strategy: Spend trillions building and controlling the AI infrastructure the world will depend on through a proprietary ecosystem. China is taking the opposite approach: Build cheaper open-source models with similar performance and encourage the world to build on top of them. The bet is simple: The winner of AI will not necessarily be whoever owns the infrastructure. .... It will be whoever builds the best companies on top of it. Just like in the post-dot-com era... The biggest winners were companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft that built businesses on top of open infrastructure.
