Took my first ride in a public Tesla Tesla Robotaxi today in San Francisco. Called it in an alley and the driver intervened after a few minutes of waiting to make a left turn out of the alley. He took a right manually and turned self-driving on again. The robotaxi immediately turned into the same one-way alley which prompted the driver to take over again. He did a u-turn in the alley manually and eventually the robotaxi was able to make the turn into the busy street. To interventions in what was supposed to be a 6-minute ride but took 15 minutes due to traffic. Not the best first ride but that's how it goes sometimes. I'm curious what this experience will be like after Tesla launches the service, especially with the Cybercab where there's no steering wheel or driver.

In this video you see how the Tesla moves away from a bike on our lane and also moves away from a car that is parking on our lane. Driving with FSD is also very efficient. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but these Tesla Robotaxi rides are starting to feel normal lol. In the best possible way, my rides have been “boring.” Seamless experience, no major hiccups, smooth and comfortable.

After giving Tesla Robotaxi rides to Joseph and Alice Keating, they tried out a few Waymo rides to compare. Here are a few of their observations: “We decided to try a Waymo while we were there as well. We were able to take two trips. The first ride wasn’t bad, pretty similar to robotaxi. The second ride almost hit a pedestrian in one instance and parked cars while making a left turn on a neighborhood street. It had to slam on the breaks both times. Also it took a left turn through a yellow light at the last second before red. During our conversation we talked about whether you could get into the driver seat of Waymo. I took this video walking around the car. It shows that door handle recessed vs the others are popped out, so no way to get in. While we enjoyed both services, we thought the robotaxi was a smoother more confident ride. Robotaxi does need some improvements but we know they will come in due time.” This is a great review & comparison and I hope you found this helpful!

The Tesla Robotaxi app just got a pretty substantial update. • New dark mode • Shows pricing discounts (like other services). • New Tips section for riders. • The app shows how many seats are available in the Robotaxi (easy to see if Unsupervised). • Now tells you that Tesla may use the interior camera to ensure safety. Below on the left is the Robotaxi app when first launched in June 2025.

The destination options in V14.1.3 are mind-blowing. I set the driveway as my park option, and even without marking a specific parking lane in my garage, it nailed a right turn and parked perfectly. On top of that, while V13.2.9 occasionally handled home garage parking after a left turn, this is the first time I’ve seen it ace a right turn into a parking spot. I’m honestly blown away.
