Today, I met with the Acting Chairman of Agege Local Government, Hon. Ganiu Obasa in company of other heads of agencies, permanent secretaries and directors, to strengthen collaboration between the State and Local Governments on environmental sustainability and waste management. Our discussion focused on how to move from a linear waste system, where we simply pick and drop, to a circular system where waste becomes a resource. This is the future we are building for Lagos. We agreed that real progress in achieving a cleaner, flood-free, and sustainable Lagos must begin at the grassroots. The Local Governments and LCDAs play a critical role in ensuring that every household, market, and street supports the State’s vision for a cleaner environment. As part of our action points: Environmental Health Officers will work directly with LAWMA to strengthen enforcement and ensure prompt waste collection. LASPARK will support identified areas in Agege with greenery and beautification. Drainage engineers attached to the LGA will provide technical support on flooding and channel maintenance. Today, we toured the Olusosun and Solous 3 dumpsites as part of our renewed push to rethink waste management in Lagos. The era of simply dumping waste is ending and we are building a system that sorts, recovers, recycles, and converts waste into value as the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed earlier in the year will focus on a sustainable circular economy. We have designated and allocated space for our partners for conversion of Waste to Wealth project and part of the deal is once they start their operations and set up a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) they will start the process of decommissioning and capping of the landfill sites. In recent times, there has been engagements between Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and PSP operators toward sustainable waste processing, modernised landfill management and structured waste carting and disposal systems. Mr Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the State Executive Council had also deliberated on waste issues; at every point of the discussion, the issue of the state of Olusosun and Solus 3 always emerged; it is appropriate for us as Ministry to take on the spot assessments of these landfills and dump sites. Over the next 18 months, both sites will transition into modern Transfer Loading Stations as we continue opening new, better-managed landfill locations in Badagry, Ikorodu, and Epe. We are giving the assurance that the State Government is resolute in its determination to give to Lagosians a sustainable and functional environment which they would be proud of. I was joined on this inspection by the Special Adviser on Environment Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, Permanent Secretary Office of Environmental Services Gaji Omobolaji, Permanent Secretary Office of Drainage Services Engr. Mahamood Adegbite, LAWMA Managing Director Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegeshin, and other senior officials from the Ministry and its agencies. We have designated and allocated space for our partners for conversion of Waste to Wealth project and part of the deal is once they start their operations and set up a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) they will start the process of decommissioning and capping of the landfill sites. In recent times, there has been engagements between Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and PSP operators toward sustainable waste processing, modernised landfill management and structured waste carting and disposal systems. Mr Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the State Executive Council had also deliberated on waste issues; at every point of the discussion, the issue of the state of Olusosun and Solus 3 always emerged; it is appropriate for us as Ministry to take on the spot assessments of these landfills and dump sites. Over the next 18 months, both sites will transition into modern Transfer Loading Stations as we continue opening new, better-managed landfill locations in Badagry, Ikorodu, and Epe. We are giving the assurance that the State Government is resolute in its determination to give to Lagosians a sustainable and functional environment which they would be proud of. I was joined on this inspection by the Special Adviser on Environment Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, Permanent Secretary Office of Environmental Services Gaji Omobolaji, Permanent Secretary Office of Drainage Services Engr. Mahamood Adegbite, LAWMA Managing Director Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegeshin, and other senior officials from the Ministry and its agencies.
