When I was at the pizza shop, a mom came in with her 3 kids. She ordered a small cheese pizza for the kid’s dinner, without judging her, I saw she pulled up in an older sky blue Dodge Caravan, it was missing a hubcap and a little rusty. The kids were clearly excited about the pizza, that tells me they didn’t get it often. I knew what I had to do. I invited the kids into the kitchen , I gave them each a medium pizza dough in a pan and told them to make their pie pizza however they wanted and that would show them how. I ladled some sauce on each of their pizza crusts and then told them to put some cheese on it, and they were having a blast, made a nice mess too but it’s cool I didn’t really care. Then I had them top their pizzas. The youngest one put four pepperonis on the whole pizza in which I intervened and told him he should space it out and put more so that he could have pepperoni in each bite. I also showed them how to make breadsticks and cinnamon sticks. The mom was so happy that her kids had a blast and I knew I did the right thing. I didn’t put her on blast I made it into a learning day for the kids and fed them well. Like this lady I grew up poor too, I know what it’s like to be hungry, and a hungry child is a sad sight to see for me, it reminded me of my own experience too much. So I always say to myself that if I can fix that I will. Am I going to solve world hunger? No, but if I can make a difference in somebody’s life I will. I’m sure you would too. This woman clearly has her heart in the right place by feeding the kids in the neighborhood, she is truly leading by example.

I am actually disgusted by this. I’ve had so many teachers that changed my life and put me in the right path, without them I don’t want to think about where I would be. These teachers are sharing how much money they have in their accounts on the par day. In a society where our teachers are guiding the minds of the future, the people who will be helping us when we are later in life. I don’t think they are appreciated enough nor is the compensation package up to par. It perplexes me how they they have to spend a crazy amount of money for their education, only to struggle to get by with a smile while still being generous enough to pay for the items our children need without being reimbursed for much of it. I think it’s time we create a change, I don’t think it’s fair we expect so much of them and they give so much to us only to relieve so little. I know people are going to argue with me and say well they chose to do it so if they aren’t happy with the pay, they can get another job. While that’s true, we would be in bad shape however if they ever chose to do that. Who would be teaching our kids and preparing them for the future. I think we focus too much on things that aren’t and shouldn’t be our priority while neglecting and overlooking a major issue right below our noses. Their jobs are important and our kids would fail without them so why are we treating them like they aren’t important? It’s because it’s easy for us to think of them as our babysitters for half the day. We treat them like Nannie’s who only watch our kids while we go to work and do things we enjoy. Maybe it’s time we revisit our roles in helping them achieve our goals.

About a year ago, we showed the Netflix hit series- The Queen’s Gambit to the kids we train at our Chess academy in Makoko. They were deeply inspired by the lead character Beth Harmon, an orphan girl who went on to become world champion. It was a story most of them could relate to. The girls came to me afterwards and asked if they could make their own Chess movie as a re-enactment of the Queen’s gambit, I told them we didn’t have all of the resources and equipment to bring it to life, but they reminded me that it was possible to do great things from a small place and they were gonna use all the resources in their own community to make it a reality. One of our tutors volunteered to record them. We left the entire creative direction to the kids and they created this masterpiece in two days. I’m in absolute awe of their courage and brilliance and I think it’s important to share this with the world. Talent is universal, but opportunity isn’t. Here’s to bridging the opportunity gap for more girls by empowering them with education and helping them believe that their dreams are valid.
