Our federal workers have been demonized since Trump took office and they are now being forced to work without pay, furloughed or even fired. That’s why Sam and I stopped by yesterday to thank some of our local federal employees for their service and delivered donuts and coffee to start their day. But they deserve much more than pastries. They deserve a functioning government where they can continue to do their critical work to support us and keep us safe. Thank you for continuing to serve our country. We need you more than ever.

Since the day I took office, my top priority has been keeping San Franciscans safe. For months, we have been anticipating the possibility of some kind of federal deployment in our city. Our communities have already endured the painful impact of aggressive immigration enforcement. At the same time, we continue to see escalated operations across the country. For the last ten months, we have been taking steps to prepare for this kind of escalation here in San Francisco. And I want to be very clear: We are prepared. Just a few minutes ago, I signed an executive directive that will build on these preparations, strengthen the city’s support for our immigrant communities, and ensure our departments are coordinated ahead of any federal deployment. Small businesses are the heartbeat of our communities. Recently, I visited Lekker Stop Shop in Park Avenue, Westridge, opposite Parkhurst Primary, owned by Damian and Jodi, young South African guys. Despite criminals breaking into their shop three times, they have remained resilient and continue to serve the community with determination and pride. Local shops like these do more than provide everyday essentials; they create jobs, support families, and keep our neighbourhoods going. We need safer communities where hardworking business owners can thrive without fear. Let us continue to support our local businesses and stand behind those who refuse to give up.

3 hours drive from us, war is still being fought. Today Palmyra was bombed and 68 people are dead. No one counts the animals. Because we are not under bombing in Idlib, people have stopped donating and we are facing a huge crisis in our funding. There is no improvement in the lives of the animals in Syria, and without funding we aren't able to help them anymore. We cannot send our mobile clinics out, because we have no funding. We cannot feed street animals because we can't afford to. We cannot send out rescue teams. We have lower donations now than we have ever had and our essential costs are the same now as they were before December 8th when the regime fell. Please, please will you reconsider reinstating your cancelled donations and giving us your support again? Without you we cannot help any of the ones who desperately need our aid. Soon we may need to reconsider our mission in Syria. We have always shared our good and bad news with you. Just now, our options are slowly disappearing.
