Our next stop was Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture. We only went because we saw Arnaud Bertrand post about it (he visited a few days earlier), and it was more or less on the way to Sayram Lake. It’s not a major tourist destination, but it’s a charming little place...

I just spent $32 on a fish and chips lunch at Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant at the wharf in DC, and it’s not the one you think. I knew about Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s kitchen restaurant at the wharf in Washington DC, but I didn’t realize that they also put in a Gordon Ramsay fish and chips right across the walkway. it is kinda like what would happen if a fast food restaurant changed their oil appropriately. The food comes out fast, the batter is light and fluffy and crispy and not stale, and it tastes good, not great. so as a fast food restaurant, this is a very good one, but I don’t think they think it’s fast food. Because after upgrading my fries and adding an iced tea, the total price I paid for this very small portion of food was $32. so if they’re not fast food, they’re competing with Irish pubs, and that might put the price more in the same range. But now that’s where the portion of food comes in, because at some Irish pubs, they give you like two or three full fish not just too little fish sticks. So, yes, you were paying an up charge for less food, and while the food is not terrible, I would still say it’s probably kind of a tourist trap. I don’t know what do you think? i’ll probably get my fish and chips at an Irish pub next time.

Best evening of our Xinjiang RV roadtrip so far: I think a good claim could be made we are as close as you can possibly get to the Garden of Eden on this Earth. We drove the RV for 7 hours to arrive in an amazingly charming little town called Wenquan (温泉), which literally means "hot spring," right on China's border with Kazakhstan. It's called this because (the smartest among you will have guessed it 😋) this place has natural hot springs, which is the central feature of the town: as you can see on the videos 👇there's a stunning hot spring lake packed with migratory birds where people can dip their feet in the water. And, this is where you'll get the Garden of Eden reference, this place is where apples originally come from! All the apple trees worldwide descend from a tree species native to this area - the Malus Sieversii. So, natural hot springs, wild birds, and the original apple tree - I don't know, rings a bell to me... Another fascinating fact about this place: it's mostly inhabited not by Han Chinese, nor Uyghurs, nor even Kazakhs but by Mongols! If you walk around town you'll see all the street signs are written in the Mongol script. In fact we're in a wider county called the Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture (博尔塔拉蒙古自治州). Why is that? It's because in the 1760s, Qing dynasty emperor Qianlong needed loyal troops to protect the border right here so he sent a group of around 2,000 Chahar Mongol soldiers and their families all the way from near Beijing to settle here permanently. 260 years later, and their descendants are still here, and many of them actually still guarding the border! My cousins and my brother and I were exploring Coney Island, we saw the sights, hung out at the arcades and before we went back to the apartment we decided to go and get something to eat, we had some money on us but not much so we decided to see what we could get at one of the vendors. This was back in the early 90’s when most of them had dollar slices of pizza wherever we went. So we got 4 pieces of pizza, should have been $4 because that’s the price we were used to. The guy wanted to charge us $24 at $6 a slice. We argues with him because one of my cousins already took a bite being so hungry. But at the least we owed $4. We gave the other slices back and refused them but had to pay for the partially eaten one, it was embarrassing that an adult would try that on a bunch of kids. We told our uncle what happened and he went back and yelled at the vendor. He was familiar with them because he used to get slices all the time from the same guy and he never charged my uncle that price. I couldn’t imagine paying that exurban amount, like this guy who was being charged $54 for a hotdog by one of the vendors. At first he thought it was a typo and it was $5.40 but the vendor. Learned it up when he said no it was $54. Would you have paid that amount? I would have walked away, clearly he was trying to possibly scam a the man for looking like a tourist. Part of the experience when visiting a new area is the street food but it’s becoming more and more a chore avoiding places like this.

Tech companies were present, and venture capital was part of the picture, but the footprint was smaller, and the transformation was not yet complete. Some of the places shown are still recognizable. A few streets, storefronts, and buildings remain much the same. Others have been replaced, rebuilt, or removed entirely. It’s a mix of the familiar and the forgotten. What comes through is a version of Palo Alto that feels more grounded in everyday life. Before it became a global center for innovation, it was still just a town, with all the ordinary details that come with that. The song is by a now-defunct Redwood City band called Nord Mariner. I think I can speak for Kyle, but I’ll speak for myself. It’s not a decision that I’ve regretted a single day since I’ve signed here. When I had signed, before I had even signed, Tony was very gracious to me and took care of me when I had to get like a meniscus scope. I had a little bit of junk in my knee floating around and just had to get a little bit of a clean up. He was really gracious. He covered that. He really took care of us from the jump and he has like every day since. So I think it’s a great place to work and to grow and present professional wrestling. It’s so cathartic hearing someone talk honestly about 9/11. A paper passport fell from an exploding plane. And somehow they knew, even in crowded New York City, that it was NOT someone dropping it on the street, or even a passenger, it was the high jacker and it also showed what country did it. It’s so unbelievably stupid, and so is ALL of it, that I grieved over learning this stuff. I felt anger, guilt, bargaining, shame, but then said “now what?” and realized I can just live a great life. But we all have to go thru this. To face the obvious and insane truth of our history will suck for a bit but it’s how you get that anxiety out of your chest like something is always wrong. Facing it allows you to feel joy again like when you were a kid. “They” all get what’s coming to them. It’s already done. No escape. Your job is to face the truth, and then be grateful for this beautiful world we live in and all the others we can spend time with. Good work Candace Owens you’re doin great kid

Timing is everything, isn’t it? And sometimes being in the right place at the right time feels well, timely, or even predetermined. With wildlife photography, it’s all about being in the right place at the right time. The more you know about your subject, the better because it increases your chances of being where you need to be when you need to be there. There is also an element of just letting go and taking what is given to you. It’s always best to have no expectations at all when it comes to wildlife. On this morning, everything did fall perfectly into place, and I was able to capture this dreamy scene of a beautiful Dalmatian pelican and its reflection on smooth water as it came in for a landing. Oh yeah, the glorious snow-capped mountains in the back were definitely a treat too. The days prior to this, that mountain range was hidden by clouds. I didn’t even know it was there. 🤪

These friends all live together in an apartment with another roommate. He does the bare minimum around the apartment, he refuses to chip in for the food or utilities that he uses, they tried to be reasonable with him but they don’t feel it’s fair that he always eats their food without replacing it. He even uses their razors and soaps in the restroom. So today a few of the roommates have decided they have had enough. They are locking up all of the supplies and food he likes to use, was this a fair move or should they just have booted him because we all know he’s not gonna pay extra for their food he eats. Wouldn’t you just stop keeping your food in the kitchen?
