Overwatch runs at 60fps medium settings holy crap This is x86 to Arm emulation, Windows to macOS, and DX11 to Metal Insane tbh

It's crazy that it runs like that on a phone chip, going through 3 compatibility layers. Guess anti-cheat isn't an issue either? Wild that it just works.

it emulates anti cheat properly now. I hope blizzard doesn't ban me, but it should still enforce anti-cheat

@lafaiel @grok what is he using for that emulation?

He's using CrossOver (from CodeWeavers). It's a polished Wine-based compatibility layer that runs Windows apps/games on macOS without a VM, handling x86-to-ARM via Rosetta 2, DirectX-to-Metal translation, and even anti-cheat emulation. That's why Overwatch hits 60fps on medium there.

Wel, that doesnt look like "just a little stuttery" 😅 And is definitely not playable at all from what im seeing

@inf4mous_x the assets usually cache pretty quick, then the stuttering stops

@inf4mous_x Then video that part LMFAO

@inf4mous_x

@BenBajarin “Totally playable” … not really

@BenBajarin

@BenBajarin Then shoot a clip where it shows that don’t cap to our eyes . You lose credibility instantly

@mweinbach @BenBajarin Maybe try speaking like an adult before you make a request. "Don't cap to our eyes." You sound like an 8 year old.

@mweinbach @BenBajarin And you sound like a trisomy case

@mweinbach @BenBajarin Is that your more eloquent attempt at calling someone a slur? You're only reinforcing my assertion of childlike behavior by resorting to doing the equivalent of calling me retarded.

@mweinbach @BenBajarin I didn’t say that you did

>BUT THE STUTTERING!! Its running in DXKV, meaning it needs to compile shaders live, you play for a little bit and the stuttering stops. I REALLY wish he had done this first to avoid the incoming wave of hate

The vast majority of people didn't care

Overwatch can run on a toaster. It's not impressive.

I'm sorry, but am I the only one seeing how much frame drops/freezes/stuttering there is? This is not playable, especially for a FPS where precision matters. Sure if you wanna walk around and do nothing while the screen freezes every few seconds I guess it's playable People will rage quit before they finish a round

You can see hitching and stutters in there. Especially when moving the camera and looking around.

Do you think the stutter is an issue with the performance of the chip or just issues with the emulation and translation? Like would an M4 MacBook Air still stutter? Asking for a friend

i think it's caching assets

All on an iPhone 16 Pro.

Wish they would do a native build 60 FPS is not impressive

it's capped at 60fps because it's a 60hz monitor and i see no need to push it

It’s a stuttering mess 🤷♂️ Also won’t it throttle after a couple minutes? My MacBook Air did

It's crazy the level of performance we're seeing out of an iPhone processor. What I want now is for my iPhone to turn into a Mac when docked!

And… for how long, approximately? My biggest question is whether it’ll experience thermal throttling and, if so, when? 👀

it throttled after about 3 minutes and stabilized at 45-50fps

I’d say 45+ is still playable for many. Keeping in mind how cheap this thing is, I can’t complain.

@mweinbach Watch the actual video and tell me that's "playable" 😂

@TheFizzyMind @mweinbach Just don’t forget about 3 layers of virtualization to run the game the laptop.

@SixPathsEvolved @mweinbach That’s indeed the crazy part of this.

At 1408x881 Res... with probably even lower Res thanks to Render Scale set on AUTO and Frame Rate on AUTO so yeah... not really good tbh.

it's an A series essentially iPhone chip running macOS with 3 levels of translation on a machine that cost $500/600 and has no fan it's insanely impressive, even if it isn't "good"

Depends on how long it can last tbh. if you play and your macbook borks after 30min because it cant handle the heat and it has to drop to 20 fps is not that great. I am not saying that its bad. I would love to play games on mac too and i even do myself on my m4 pro

it throttles quickly but stabilizes at 45-50fps and did not dip below that. been playing for like 10-15 minutes

what about after 1 or 2 hours?

idk I just installed it, but every other piece of apple silicon I've used throttles fast but stabilizes high so it may peak ago like 70fps if I uncap it, but throttle down to 40-50 and stay there until the battery dies

you have to remember the max TDP I saw this machine hit was like 12-15W total the passive cooling can handle that well if it throttles and stays at ~9W

thats actually impressive. tho i wonder how cpu games like world of warcraft run on it

No match footage? Practice range isnt a good benchmark

I’ll let someone else do it, I just uninstalled it because I want my storage for other stuff

what the fuck do you mean a Phone is packing all this

Wait can you play it actually or does anti-cheat get in the way.

Do it overheat? I ask because I have a MacBook Pro with the intel chip and in games like fucking balatro the lap becomes a oven

i haven't had a macbook air or pro overheat outside of the most extreme workloads since Apple silicon, and it has gotten better every year

HOW?

never underestimate Crossover! CodeWeavers can do magic

@jukan05 Much more challenging than valve doing mere windows binaries on linux. But since valve is looking at arm they might reinvent that wheel for steamOS. Not that it’ll help on macOS, but…

@jukan05 I know they started work on arm translation because of the steam vr headset using a snapdragon chip

YO what? Ow2 didn't even launch via crossover last time I checked. It'd work wonders on my Mac mini m4 Pro if this actually works 😭

latest macOS 26.4 beta and latest Crossover Preview fixed it

Fast reply but Yeah I can see that. I only ever dreamed of this hoping so much then I gave up. I wonder how they fixed it? it was a bug in rosseta 2? So only apple could have fixed it.

one of the other replies that lead me to realizing it was fixed said apple fixed it in this beta yea

Oh my days! I never would have thought apple fix would fix it. maybe they are doing the final fixes before discounting development of it after macOS 26 :(

This would go so hard if Apple didn't charge a gorillion dollars for Crapbooks and Apple wasn't such a dogshit anticonsumer company

@FRENZYVIRUS808 This is $500/600 and fully modular and repairable, no adhesive only screws. Can be fully disassembled in ~ 6 minutes

Still a Crapple product that makes Crapple profit.

That’s clearly not 60 FPS. When the screen is visibly tearing, it’s horrible. The entire system is being bottlenecked and freaking out. Please for the love of all that is holy, do not game on the Mac Neo. That’s not its purpose and will likely result in a fried motherboard.

Translation not emulation

Rosetta translates, these emulate

@anthonieisacnt nope! they literally all translate. Crossover/Proton are both an extension/wrappers for Wine, which is not an emulator, then it goes through DXVK to spit out translated Vulkan instructions from DX11 and it gets translated again to Metal via MoltenVK. Rosetta translates/precp x86

@mweinbach This. Thank you. Also doesn’t Crossover do direct DX->Metal for Mac?

@mweinbach I don't know about that since I don't own an ARM mac, but usually everything is handled via MoltenVK since it's the best performing option and well polished tooling already exists for anything -> vk, if Crossover does that I suppose it's this way (game native) but don't quote me

@anthonieisacnt No there's direct DirectX11/12 to Metal layers, hell Apple provides one first party! GamePorting Toolkit I'm not sure why they'd ever go from DX > Vulkan > Metal

This is just defying physics at this point 😆😆😆 Holy shit, Apple will make another quadrillion dollars off of this thing and for a good reason

Whats the game resolution running at? Impressive if medium 1080p. If sub 800p its just okay coz thats low res and stuttering is visible

it's like 800p, at 1600p it was only like 30fps but I didn't have AMD FSR 1 or FSR 2.2 enabled

that translation stack is wild - x86->arm->windows->macos->dx11->metal and still hitting 60fps? curious what the cpu/gpu utilization looks like compared to native. the emulation layers must be getting seriously optimized

it's currently insane that a budget device can do this. People that doesn't know about CrossOver it's a cool tool to play Windows games on MacOS

Wow, honestly good to see these gaming tests that you're putting out because I really wanna see the limits of this thing. really cool to see, would love to see more

These are just things I normally would play I want to see if I can on the neo Someone else will definitely do more thorough testing and give better feedback

x86 to ARM is crazy, android phones are running RDR2 rn with Fex and Proton. INSANE!

Overwatch runs on basically anything, I used to run this game on an AMD phenom 2 955 paired with a Radeon 5850. Really not that impressive knowing the capabilities of apple silicone

Somewhere Blizzard devs are confused why their game runs this well.

@BenBajarin Yeah, runs if you tolerate it with lag that makes it unplayable. But I guess technically it runs.

The stutter is probably the initial shader compilation, that the game is doing. It happens to my old laptop too. It takes like 1-2 mins than it's running fine. C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation\NV_Cache

is 60 fps WHEN is 60 fps, there are jumps every time it needs to render an explosion. I understand the machine is nice and smooth, I like it too, but dropping critical thinking doesn't do anyone any good. A game like that can't be played well.

x86 → ARM → macOS → Metal → still 60fps. That’s not a compatibility layer, that’s a whole compatibility lasagna.

This will be my next laptop

That is not playable in way, shape or form. The copium is hard.
