Owls make no sound when they fly

Owls fly silently due to specialized feathers with serrated edges that reduce air turbulence and absorb sound. Their large wings allow slow, quiet gliding, essential for hunting prey undetected, making them highly efficient nocturnal predators.

There is an explanation for this. Owls have unique feathers with serrated edges, a soft texture, and a velvety surface. These features help break up the turbulent air that typically creates sound when it passes over the wing surface. The serrations on the leading edge of the primary feathers disrupt the airflow, reducing the noise produced during flight. Owls also have large wings relative to their body size, which results in low wing loading. Wing loading is the ratio of an animal's weight to its wing area. Lower wing loading allows for slower flight and more lift, reducing the impact of turbulence and noise. The larger wings also provide more surface area for the specialized feathers, contributing to their effectiveness in reducing sound.

I also make no sound when I fly

I remember once cycling on a dusty Indian dirt road in Kanpur, just outside the Uni campus, and felt a moving shadow and a very soft 'thing' caress my face... I had to stop, turned and there was this magnificent 'tall' owl, may be around 1.5 ft high, that landed on a tree by the road side ... it was staring at me with those hypnotizing eyes. And I did not hear anything, I just felt a strong presence and the wing which probably touched my face.
