This bag is bloated because there’s rotting fruit inside. And the scary part is that it looks like it belongs on the shelf. The brand has two product lines. One is freeze-dried and shelf stable. The other is frozen and has to stay cold. But at a quick glance, the colors, typography, layout, and pouch structure feel almost identical. That difference should be impossible to miss. Instead, the packaging system makes two completely different handling requirements look like the same product family with a tiny variation. So when the frozen product ends up on an ambient shelf, it can pass as normal. The employee stocking it might not notice. The customer walking by probably won’t notice. And the packaging only starts “communicating” once the fruit is already rotting inside the bag. By the time the pouch bloats, the design has already failed. This is where “staying on brand” can become a liability. Consistency is useful until it hides the one piece of information that actually matters. If two products need completely different storage conditions, the packaging design needs to create friction. A frozen-only color system could’ve helped. A much louder “KEEP FROZEN” treatment could’ve helped. A different pack format probably would’ve made the mistake obvious before it hit the wrong shelf. Because packaging doesn’t just live in a brand deck. It lives in stockrooms, grocery aisles, tired shifts, rushed decisions, and customers who are barely looking. This tiny soy sauce fish might be one of the smartest sustainability upgrades I’ve seen in packaging lately. It looks small, but the design thinking behind it is anything but. After five years of development, Heliograf created a soy sauce container made from sugarcane bagasse that breaks down in home compost in just 6 weeks. That means a familiar single use format now has a far better ending. What makes this so strong is that it keeps the fish shaped design people already know and the squeeze function they expect. But it improves the experience with a larger 12mL capacity, solving one of the biggest annoyances of the original plastic version. The smartest part is that this is not just a material swap. Scott Belsky on the most common mistake founders make when building a product “Every product has what we call a ‘first-mile experience’, which is the part of your product that the most customers will see. And it’s all drop-off from there. What gets people through the first-mile experience? First, you have to empathize with where that customer is at — whether they’re a consumer or an enterprise customer, in the first 30 seconds of that first mile of your product, I guarantee you, they’re lazy, vain, and selfish. They want to get through it fast. They want to look good to their boss or their friends or feel good about themselves. There needs to be some quick hit of feeling successful in that first mile for them to engage further.” Ironically, the first-mile experience is the last thing many companies and product people will focus on. “Typically it’s the final mile before you launch where you’re like, ‘Oh wait, what should the onboarding be?’ or ‘What should the defaults be?’ That’s like a happenstance conversation towards the end of shipping when in fact that’s the only thing that every customer will ever see. So why not nail that?” Scott takes this point even further: “If you can really just nail the first-mile experience of your product — even if after that it’s all kind of crappy — you’re probably in the top 1% of products out there.” Another interesting point Scott makes here is that optimizing the first-mile experience is something that you’ll have to continually work on because your customers change over time. “Your first cohort of customers that used your product, those were early adopters — and your first-mile experience was nailed for them. But [as you’ve grown] this new cohort of customers that started using your product are no longer early adopters. They’re pragmatists. They’re not coming because they like to test and try new products. In the end one Maldives Airports Company Ltd staff personally helped me find a belt so I could strap the broken luggage. He did this out of goodwill, not because of any formal process. Individual kindness is appreciated. But systems should not depend on individual kindness. This isn’t about one suit case. This isn’t about one airline. This is about the over 1 BILLION USD we spent on this airport. This is about the first impression of Maldives. The job of Gov and MACL is not just to build terminals it is also to make this 1B airport experience world-class. We are a tourism depended country and for most tourists, the airport is their first experience of the Maldives. It sets the first impression. Everyone else on my flight was Chinese. Imagine if a tourist with language barriers faced this situation. Imagine struggling with broken luggage, no clear process, no guidance. What impression of the Maldives would that leave? A billion-dollar airport must have minimum, enforceable passenger assistance standards. World-class infrastructure means nothing without world-class systems and here we are talking about MINIMUM passenger assistance standards. Many startups find early pull, but only a few break out. Why? They stop at product/market fit and never find business model fit. Business model fit isn’t just about how much you charge for your product, but HOW you charge for it, and how you align customer value with your pricing. There’s a lot of advice out there about seat-based vs. usage-based vs. outcome-based pricing, but all of that is just noise. The search for business model fit is as specific to your company as the search for product market fit. You need to align your acquisition strategy and monetization strategy with your customer and product. It’s all one interconnected system. Take Slack for example: many associate Slack’s early success with its fun, creative design and fresh approach to communication. That’s what drew people to the product. But a big part of what made Slack a breakout success was business model fit. Freemium wasn’t just an acquisition tactic, it was essential to driving the revenue flywheel, viral expansion, and adoption in the enterprise. Obvious in retrospect, but controversial and against the grain of what others were doing at the time.
