For Dr Joel Gondi, Director of Primary Health Care, the idea behind PHC is simple: Kenyans should be able to find the essential health services they need close to where they live. That means bringing preventive, promotive and basic curative care together, rather than patients being sent from one place to another looking for services. Community Health Promoters are central to making that work. Dr Gondi says Kenya is now looking at how their kits can better respond to different community needs, how stipends can flow consistently and how CHPs can be better supported and recognised as part of the health system. Because what a community needs in Kwale may not be exactly what another needs in Turkana or Nyeri.
