2014 clip shows how much Elon Musk appreciates taxpayers. Host: Taxpayers essentially loaned you, Tesla, almost 500 million dollars. How much of that do you still owe? Elon Musk: We paid the whole loan back with interest and a prepayment penalty last year. Host: Did you have to do that? It wasn’t due, was it? Facebook VP of Growth Alex Schultz: “Retention is the single-most important thing for growth” Alex walks through how to calculate a retention curve for your startup (graph the percentage of monthly active users on the y-axis versus the number of days from acquisition on the x-axis). As he explains: “If you end up with a retention curve that asymptotes to a line parallel to the x-axis, you have a viable business, and you have product/market fit for some subset of market.” If you do not have a retention curve that flattens out, you do not have product/market fit and none of the growth hacking or virality tactics that people love to talk about will work. “Focus on getting to product market/fit… If you don’t have a great product, there’s not point executing well on growing it, because it won’t grow. 🐻‍❄️ chasing only an ideal can actually be harmful. it’s like having an ideal type. that whole idea is kinda funny to me. you want someone who fits that exact image, but even if you meet that person, you have no idea how well you’d actually get along. i think you just have to learn to focus on the present, then as you do that, wouldn’t it help to pay attention to what you actually like, and what kinds of things you do get a positive response from others?

At the time Robinhood went public, the company’s business was concentrated in options, crypto, & equities.. products that benefited directly from the conditions of 2020–2021, with booming markets & low interest rates. But that concentration quickly became a point of concern as interest rates rose & many of the trends that supported Robinhood’s IPO-era growth reversed. As Tenev explains, the shift in macro conditions forced the company to reassess its strategy & operating model.. leading Robinhood to make the tactical decision to broaden its product base & revenue streams. In roughly four years, the company matured past its original concentrated model to now operate 11 business lines generating $100+ million in annual revenue (!!) with several additional products scaling in the $10-$100 million range. The vision? Financial Super App. . . . “The time we went public, Robinhood was pretty much an options, crypto and equities business, and now we have 11 business lines that generate $100 million in annual revenue or more. For a long time we were criticized that we were sort of a business that would do well when markets were going up, interest rates were going down, as was the case in 2020 and a large part of 2021. But what happened when interest rates went up and we had sort of like the reversal of most of the trends that were powering our business and our IPO during Covid, we had to kind of bear down and pivot our business into one that was more all weather. So the Robinhood you see today, much more diversified, where we have 11 business lines that are at scale and a couple more that are also, you know, in that $10M to $100M range.”

Only one week later, Forbes published an article exposing Bilzerian for misrepresenting his entire lifestyle. The Forbes’ report claimed that Dan paid $26,000 to boost his Instagram following, paid the girls who were consistently featured on his Instagram, and did not own the home. By September of that same year, the USA Herald released a follow-up report revealing that Dan’s company, Ignite, was actually being operated by his father, Paul Bilzerian. This revelation was particularly significant because Paul Bilzerian is legally prohibited from being involved with publicly traded companies. According to the reports: • Dan’s lifestyle was allegedly funded entirely by Ignite. • In interviews, Dan claimed to speak to his father only four or five times a year, but evidence suggested Paul was actively running the business. • It appears Dan went to great lengths to obscure his father’s direct ties to the company's operations.
