In 1966, following President Ayub Khan’s visit to the UK, Pakistan stepped into computing history as PIA installed the country’s first commercial mainframe, an IBM 1401 in Karachi to automate flights, payroll, and logistics. A major tech milestone.

Like him or loath him, Ayub Khan definitely had a great personality & stature during 1960s especially. PAK did make great strides forward during 1960s under his leadership. Under him in 1960s, PAK fought back India’s failed aggression in 1965 & also defeating Afghanistan too.

Pakistan in the 50s–70s was far ahead of much of South Asia economically. Had that growth continued, it could’ve been a top 5–6 economy today. I believe the military’s growing influence changed that trajectory.

Both military & civil leadership were equally responsible for it.
