We don’t ask nightclubs to serve orange squash to kids so they can have something to drink. We say no kids in nightclubs. Social media is exactly the same. Social media is not a safe for children. Extreme content is rife, and the safeguards the companies have put in place are complex and woefully ineffective. It’s time to make sure children are protected from adult spaces. The Government should focus on what matters, not banning companies they don’t like.

If you are raised by a single parent who is working extra hours to make ends meet, that parent may have less time to monitor what you are consuming online. You may also lack a role model or authority figure who can say, “That stuff you’re seeing online is crazy. Don’t take it seriously.” I have spoken with several upper-middle-class parents who are deeply concerned about screen addiction. They deliberately enroll their children in soccer, piano lessons, math camps, and other extracurricular activities. Some have told me, “I don’t even care whether my child likes every activity. I just know that if he isn’t doing these things, he’ll be alone in his room on his phone.” In effect, they fill nearly all the empty space on the calendar so their children are not spending hours scrolling or doomscrolling on TikTok. Families with fewer resources, especially single-parent or otherwise fragmented families, are much less able to do this.

Our churches and social clubs have emptied out. Social media, which was advertised as a tool to bring us together, did the exact opposite. And they're soaking in hostile propaganda 8 hours a day from the phones in their pockets. Our kids are going to search for belonging no matter what we do. And there are plenty of voices out there offering a finished identity: 'THIS is what you believe. THIS is who YOU are.' So, what are we offering instead?
