The last few days have made me think a lot about my parents, and my grandparents. My parents were raised by people who lived through the Korean War. Survival wasn’t abstract to them. It was their life. Complaining wasn’t really a thing, not because they were cold, but because being alive and free already felt like winning. That mindset carried straight into how my parents raised me and my sisters. After my accident, my parents were incredibly sweet and attentive. My mom insisted I stay at her house that night so she could watch over me. She made me take an Epsom salt bath and watched me like I was ten again. She sat on the toilet and talked to me the entire time. My dad went to my house to pick up Mochi for me. He adores her. He is soft about her. I am also fairly certain he gave her too many treats, which is why I do not trust him unsupervised with her… 🫶 🐶 An hour later, we were on the phone with the insurance company, securing a rental car. The next day, they drove me to pick it up. My mom drove their car home. My dad made me drive the rental, and then required me to take the exact same route where the accident happened. It wasn’t a discussion. It was required. Not because he’s mean. Because he loves me. In our family, self reliance matters. We come together when something goes wrong, but the priority is always to make sure the individual can stand on their own two feet. My parents weren’t allowed to whine or complain to their parents either. Why? Because my grandparents were grateful to be alive and free. It could have gone very differently for them. For us. That gratitude became discipline. That discipline became resilience. And that resilience got passed down. I’m deeply thankful for it. You will never hear me crying because Starbucks messed up my order or throw a temper tantrum at target bc it is taking too long to process my gift card. Life is amazing. Be grateful.
