One quiet flaw in our justice system: It claims to protect “reasonable doubt” but then pressures jurors to reach unanimous verdicts. Forced unanimity risks pushing jurors toward compromise, not conviction. If a jury’s hung, like in this case on 'Racketeering', that is the verdict. It means they’re not all convinced and in a system built on doubt, that should be the end of it. But sending them back to “keep deliberating” isn’t justice. It’s coercion. And in serious cases where life is on the line, that kind of pressure doesn’t produce truth, it manufactures convictions. Especially when jurors are outnumbered (10–2, 11–1), less assertive, emotionally worn down, they may abandon a principled “not guilty” vote just to end the deadlock. Yes, it’s legal, but it walks a very fine ethical line, because justice isn’t about consensus. It’s about doubt.
