He didn't say he wants to rid the earth of evil, but rather he said he wants to rid "Israel" of evil. After he rejected his Christian roots, he adopted Old Testament Judaism and views himself as part of Israel.

In 2018, Pope Francis created a new draft of CCC 2267 which states: "the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person." But the death penalty has never been understood as this in the church. If so, that would mean everyone under the authority of the church who enacted it would be committing an intrinsic evil.
