This was filmed last week in Tampa, Florida. Phone cam footage is shaky but captures everything. The veteran is Marcus, 36, Marine Corps. Severe PTSD. His therapist suggested getting a dog. Marcus came to browse. Not sure he was ready. Walking down the kennel hallway looking at dogs. Most are barking. Jumping. Overwhelming. Then Marcus passes one kennel. A Pit Bull inside. Male. About four years old. The dog isn't barking. Just stands up. Presses his nose through the bars. Staring at Marcus. Marcus stops walking. Looks at the dog. Kneels down. The dog pushes his entire face through the gap in the bars trying to reach Marcus. Whining softly. Marcus asks staff if he can meet this dog. Staff member unlocks the kennel. Opens the door. The dog doesn't run out crazy. He walks directly to Marcus. Then launches. Wraps both front paws around Marcus's neck. Won't let go. Marcus falls backward. Sitting on the floor. Dog in his lap. Paws still wrapped around his neck. Pressing his face into Marcus's shoulder. Marcus wraps his arms around the dog. They stay like that. Staff member filming says "I've never seen Zeus act like this. This is Marcus, and his accidental service dog, Gunner. Marcus served 3 deployments to Afghanistan. For years, he’s woken up at 3am, drenched in sweat, convinced he’s in back in Kandahar. Gunner came to the family when his owner passed away, which was a neighbor of Marcus. On the first night they had him, Marcus had a nightmare, and Gunner immediately jumped on his chest, and laid on him. For the first time in years, Marcus didn’t thrash, and was able to just breath, despite almost 80lbs of weight on him. Gunner laid on him for 2hrs+ that night. Marcus’s wife had urged him to get help for years. She was able to catch it on recording, to show to his counselor. The counselor told them what Gunner was doing was called “Pressure Therapy”…which is what PTSD service dogs are trained to do. Gunner never had training. He just had instincts, and an instant bond. The term, “Man’s best friend” doesn’t cut it sometimes.
