We have significant issues here in Australia - many brought about by decades of a Murdoch dominant media landscape - but we’re very fortunate to live here for many of the reasons Keating highlights. He actually said this after Trump’s first election - still stands today.

No, he’s wrong. In fact his argument doesn’t even make any sense. Australia is a huge land mass with a tiny population. We are not powerful. We NEED big friends, and the US is the biggest friend any nation can have. And why would the US ever sacrifice its resources for us if we are not prepared to sacrifice ours for them? That’s the real world, not Keating Land.

Only he and Gough as PM’s acted in Australia’s interests. Murdoch ran campaigns against both. Stupid Australians gave us Fraser & Howard. Fraser was a shocker early. Howard has been a shocker since his entry to politics. All other PM’s cow towed to the US. Pathetic.

Paul Keating was rarely wrong. Too neoliberal for some, as a left politician (deregulated banks, floated the AUD), but always with a focus on bringing those with least up a few pegs through govt intervention.
