Paul Schrader on why 'Cat People' (1982) failed at the box office: "It really fell between two stools: it was an attempt to have things both ways, which is to have a classy film and a horror film. Well, the horror audience went and said, ‘Hey, this doesn’t look... show more

Most people know the song Ben by Michael Jackson. Most people don't know, it was written for a horror film called BEN, about a rat, sequel to WILLARD, and is the only song ever nominated for an Oscar from a horror film!

Elemental is still just a charmer. I'm glad the film was able to find the audience it has because it really is a sweet film and the colors in it are amazing.

Elemental really is such a sweet film from Pixar and the romance between Ember and Wade really was so sweet and lovely. I'm glad it's found an even bigger audience now because it deserves it. It's just such a heartfelt film.

Stanley Kramer on the box-office failure of "Inherit the Wind" (1960): "Interviewer: Has an audience ever disliked a film that you, personally, liked very much? Kramer: Sure. One of the lowest grossing films in the world was 'Inherit the Wind' (1960). Nobody went to see it and I went all over the world with it. It had great reviews, and nobody went to see the film, so they must not have liked it. Word of mouth was not good until it came of age on television, and then it got a whole brand-new audience." #WATCH | Mumbai | On his upcoming movie Bhooth Bangla, Director Priyadarshan says, "When we made Bhool Bhulaiyaa, we didn't think about horror comedy. We just thought of a film which is a psychological thriller. But if you watch any film of mine, there will be a lot of humour...When the audience goes to watch a horror film, they'll be very tense. They actually look for a chance to laugh...We are trying to exploit that weakness of the audience...In Bhooth Bangla also, there are sequences which are very tense and have humour...This is a nice combination...Whenever I think of humour, my first preference definitely is Akshay..."

Suraj Kumar reviewed #Rajasaab as a ultra DISASTER!! He said - “This is India’s first AI Hero film, where the hero looks completely AI. Firstly, this is a ₹450 crore horror comedy film, and finding horror comedy itself is the biggest mystery in the film. You’ll keep thinking till the end, Where is the horror-comedy?But in the end, it’s revealed that the horror was Prabhas’s expressions and the comedy was Prabhas’s acting.” “Prabhas’s laziness in the film is such that no one will call out his acting because they’re all afraid of losing subscribers.”

There are two types of people in this world. One that thinks this is the beginning of a horror film and the other that would completely love to do this. Which are you?

Henri-Georges Clouzot on what he wanted the audience to feel while watching "La Prisonnière" (1968): "Schrader: Could you have conceived 'La Prisonnière' in black and white? Clouzot: I don't think so. Schrader: What struck me about 'La Prisonnière', like so many of your films, is that it is totally perverse. You seem to create a film consisting only of antagonists. Clouzot: I wanted this picture to be unbearable. I think that vice is something unbearable and we have to stand it. You can't imagine what is vice if it is bearable. For me it's Hell, really. I wanted the viewers to feel this way. I like the people to be as ashamed as the girl is. Schrader: Do you sympathize with any of the characters? Clouzot: No, I don't think so. All three of them are very vicious. I don't share the feelings of any of the characters." (Henri-Georges Clouzot's interview with Paul Schrader, 1969)

Paul Schrader explains how 'Rolling Thunder'(1977) ended up being a fascist film: "'Rolling Thunder' (1977) was going to be my first film as a director. That film has an ironic history. I originally sold it to Larry Gordon at AIP, and then Larry moved from AIP to Columbia and took it with him, and then he left Columbia and took it to Twentieth Century Fox, made it there, and then Twentieth sold it back to AIP again and they released it. The story of 'Rolling Thunder' was really botched in the rewriting. The main character in the film was meant to be the same sort of character as Travis, with that same anti-social edge. The character, as I originally wrote him, was a Texas trash racist who had become a war hero without ever having fired a gun, and came home to confront the Texas Mexican community. All his racism from his childhood and Vietnam comes out, and at the ending of the film there’s an indiscriminate slaughter of Mexicans, meant as some kind of metaphor for American racism in Vietnam. In order to get it made at Twentieth, they insisted that that racist element be taken out, which is the equivalent of giving Travis Bickle a dog. Once you take out the perverse pathology of these characters, rather than become films about fascism they become fascist films, and that’s what happened to Rolling Thunder." ('Schrader on Schrader & other writings' edited by Kevin Jackson, 1990)

The kissing scene between Samara Weaving and Bella Thorne in "The Babysitter" was intentionally designed to prepare the audience for the film's dramatic tonal shift. Director McG used the sequence to soften the audience before the film's sudden tonal shift into violence, chaos and horror. The contrast made the events that followed feel even more shocking and unpredictable, giving the scene a greater purpose within the film. The scene became a standout moment and it also helped establish Samara Weaving as a modern scream queen and a rising star of the horror genre.
