Paul Dano didn't have to act terrified in the finale of There Will Be Blood (2007). Daniel Day-Lewis was hurling real bowling balls at him with full force. Dano admitted he genuinely feared for his safety as the heavy props bounced around him.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being was released 38 years ago. Daniel Day-Lewis later distanced himself from the film, unhappy with his accent. That dissatisfaction pushed him toward deeper immersion in later roles, shaping the method he became famous for.

Leonardo DiCaprio recalls his first meeting with Daniel Day-Lewis after Martin Scorsese sent him to help recruit the retired actor for the role of Bill the Butcher in GANGS OF NEW YORK (2002). One of cinema’s great casting stories.

I don’t know what got into Tarantino when he watched Paul Dano in There Will Be Blood, but he missed one crucial point: Dano proved he’s one of the rare actors who didn’t get overshadowed while sharing the screen with a powerhouse like Daniel Day-Lewis.

Evening viewing recommendation? On Criterion Channel, watch THERE WILL BE BLOOD (2007) in our Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson collection! 🖤 An electrifying performance from Daniel Day-Lewis animates this sprawling epic of family, faith, power, and oil—the rare twenty-first-century film to have already ascended to the level of modern myth.

Cate Blanchett losing Best Actress for TÁR (2022) to Michelle Yeoh is the kind of Oscar decision that ages worse every year. The performance is on the level of Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood (2007), and the Academy already knows it.

Before filming began, Edward Norton and Edward Furlong shaved their heads for their roles. Edward Norton also gained 30 pounds of muscle. Constant changes to the script by Edward Furlong and Edward Norton resulted in Tony Kaye being disappointed with the project and leaving him wanting to quit. Kaye claimed their tinkering with the script changed the script radically from his own vision of it. He was also reportedly so unsatisfied with Norton's performance that he still, to this day feels the movie is unfinished. American History X (1998).

Paul Thomas Anderson’s earned a handful of #Oscar nominations over the last 30 years but has never been awarded the statue. I think that changes in one week. It’s still a little weird he didn’t win an Academy Award for There Will Be Blood. It’s an American masterpiece.

I’m still stunned Paul Dano didn’t receive an Oscar nomination for There Will Be Blood. I understand the Best Supporting Actor field was loaded that year (Bardem, Affleck, PSH, etc.) but there needed to be room for Dano. He literally goes toe-to-toe with peak Daniel Day-Lewis.

Daniel Day-Lewis stayed fully in character for My Left Foot (1989) — even off-camera. Crew members were frustrated because they had to wheel him around everywhere, as if he truly couldn’t walk. Even his own agent walked off the set after Day-Lewis refused to drop the act for a single conversation. He held Christy Brown’s posture for so long, he broke two ribs during filming.
