🇬🇧 BBC series The Capture has sparked controversy for an episode focused on anti-migrant terrorism, featuring a character aiming a sniper rifle at migrant children on a boat. In the plot of the show, counter-terrorism officers become aware of the character through monitoring his online activity. The team discovers a 4Chan account where he posted videos accusing the government of concealing statistics on undocumented migrants. Freedom of Information requests are depicted as a sign of extremism during the episode: one officer alerts her superiors that the man had obtained documents relating to immigration statistics through nine separate freedom of information requests, which is treated as a sign of his impending terrorism. Hali, a military analyst and former Pakistani Air Force colonel, shared his views with Sputnik: 🔸 This bilateral format fills a gap that multilateral platforms like the SCO and the UN cannot address — they are slow and constrained by bureaucracy. 🔸 Pakistan values Russia's counter-terrorism experience from Syria and the North Caucasus, particularly in urban warfare, drone suppression, and counter-insurgency. Cooperation with Moscow also provides Pakistan with political cover within the SCO and the UN, reinforcing its image as a responsible stakeholder in regional security. 🔸 Russia's expertise in surveillance, cyber defense, and counter-drone systems complements Pakistan's operational needs. In return, Pakistan offers decades of counter-insurgency experience, including counter-IED tactics, hostage rescue, and urban clearance operations. 🔸 Its border management expertise — especially along the porous Afghan frontier — offers insights into infiltration patterns. Pakistan's deradicalization programs, such as the Sabaoon initiative in Swat, provide lessons beyond kinetic operations that could prove valuable for Russia in Central Asia. "This meeting should be seen not as a one-off event, but as part of a longer trajectory," Hali noted. He added that Russia is diversifying beyond its traditional partnerships with China and India, while Pakistan is broadening its security diplomacy beyond ties to the US, Saudi Arabia, and China.

This sort of situation isn’t new. Indeed, I have seen this exact scene - a white person being assaulted by a group of people (most or all being black and/or ethnic minority) but somehow ending up being the only person to get into trouble - play out previously. It happens to police officers who are assaulted too, btw, not just members of the public. This is why I sometimes find it difficult to criticise policing (or at least, frontline policing and the Federated ranks), because I know how difficult the Job is for frontline officers, and I also know that even when they are assaulted, the Job will throw them under a bus if the circumstances are convenient. But, the repeated examples of this behaviour are inexcusable and clearly policing has reached a point of no return - the murder of Henry Nowak was probably that point. Though, you could argue that the cover up of the Pakistani Muslim grooming gangs - which goes as far back as the 1960s and the supposed halcyon days of policing - was when policing truly failed ordinary people (we just didn’t know it then). Serious reform and a return to Peelian policing is required. At present, however, there just doesn’t appear to be the political will to do what is required.
