What an exciting day at Wallops Island. The Antonov AN-124 came in from the south this morning, touching down at NASA Wallops Flight Facility at around 10:10 AM. No photo does that aircraft justice — it has to be seen in person to truly appreciate the scale. It taxied to the end of the runway and was unloaded incredibly fast. By the time we packed up and went to grab lunch down the road, it was already back in the air. Total ground time: roughly two and a half hours. Rocket Lab moved fast today. Right after lunch we swung by the AIC — Rocket Lab's Assembly and Integration Complex — and sure enough, they were already loading the PAF (Payload Attach Fitting / Payload Adapter) into the gray building at the Neutron complex. The other containers offloaded from the AN-124 remain a mystery — we never did see where those went. Watching to see if Rocket Lab issues any media briefings soon. Also put together a short video from about 250 still photos taken during the landing this morning — excuse a little jitter, but it captures just how quickly things moved today. So remember that time machine I told you about? I managed to sneek out another video from my visit to the future.. this time I captured video of a 3d artist creating assets for a short commercial. They sculpted the bird in the video with nothing but two controllers which they used to manipulate generative matter in 3d. The AI model changed in realtime and adopted their style of work, both based on the work they did on the scene, and on reference images they gave the system. Seeing the 3d model transform in realtime as they were working on it was incredible. When it started moving and reacted to their instructions, I knew it was time to return to the present :D #art #ai

004/100 Buttons. A bit of the process on building an animation. When looking at a finished animation or in this example a finished button, it can look quite complex inside the CSS. But when building it, it’s more like a lot of simple steps, one after another. Here I had the idea to make some kind of text animation like the footer logo on the Osmo site. I try to add the base animation with no complex easing, for example transition: translate 0.4s ease. Starting with just moving the one text from bottom to top and the other text to top. Adding a stagger, play around with it. Searching for a way to make it more circular. On the research I found the sin() function inside CSS which can build a more smooth non linear curve for the stagger which creates this circular effect. And step by step adding more complexity like, different easing for hover/hover-out, opacity, 3D transform and more. I use also the sin() function to rotate the letters, so the middle ones are getting more rotated than the outer ones. Another thing which helps is to add a small delay on hover, for example 0.05s or 0.1s, you don’t really see the difference, but when you hover pretty fast on and out it doesn’t get that jumpy. I’m using here GSAP’s SplitText to split every char into spans. And then I’m adding a CSS index variable to every span, starting from the center. SplitText can provide CSS index variables, but you cannot tell it from which direction. The renovation of Belleair CC’s East Course involves moving some seriously mature trees. The process and planning for moving these trees is very thorough. The result- a completely renovated golf course with a seasoned feel to it. Unlike the restoration of our West course, the East is only restoring about a third of Ross’ design. Why not restore it all? It was an impossible task- back in the 1980s our current clubhouse was built over the original driving range. At that time we built a new driving range and lost two par threes and the opening holes of the East. Around that same time the club needed a irrigation pond for the 36 holes, which ate up a good portion of Ross’ East Course design on the other side of the road. The result of that redesign was a course which had 6 subpar golf holes. This renovation will create a better golf course designed to challenge all skill levels. I am very excited to have a better East Course!

Two weeks ago I fixed one of my teeth with algorithms I wrote a couple of years ago! I got hooked by 3D scanning when I started to work for a software shop in Zurich that was programming 3D computational geometry algorithms for denture scanning to produce crowns (and more). Back then, a typical reconstruction pipeline was like: scan the patient’s teeth using an intraoral scanner, reconstruct the surface mesh, design the restoration digitally, and finally mill the crown out of ceramic. We were working mostly with point clouds and meshes, but it wasn’t just math, it was craftsmanship translated into a digital process. Every micron mattered. You could literally see how a good algorithm meant a better fit in someone’s mouth. Gaussian Splatting isn’t about surface reconstruction, it’s about appearance reconstruction. It doesn’t care about explicit topology, it captures how light interacts with the scene. In a sense, it’s the opposite philosophy of the dental world: instead of modeling what the object is, it models how the object looks. 3D Gaussian Splatting enables applications like training self driving cars, teaching robots to understand their environment, creating virtual worlds, or monitoring real sites. It represents scenes as millions of small Gaussians rendered in real time without the need for meshes or textures. Coming from a world where precision geometry was everything, this shift felt natural. It’s still about reconstruction, but with a different goal: not manufacturing a perfect object, but reproducing how the world actually looks.
