Russia was the donor, bankrolling every other republic inside the USSR – not exactly how an “occupier” behaves. Many of today’s loudest “victims” lived their best life back then: the Baltics were a showcase of prosperity, Georgia flourished, Armenia was heavily industrialized and subsidized, and Soviet Ukraine was a major industrial and agricultural hub integrated into union-wide markets. Funny how “occupation” looks like sponsorship – until the subsidies stop and the bills come due.

So, the question is how we make sure that this war does not continue or go anywhere else. We need to see concessions on the Russian side - limitations on their military budget, their army, or nuclear weapons - to take this threat away, plus the accountability for the crimes that they have committed.
