I have read in my Ancient History books that people used to kill cattle in name of sacrifice in Vedic times(Aryans and non-aryans). Bali was so prevalent. Although Rig veda mentions the word Ashwa and Gau multiple times. Brahmans followed buddhism and jainism to preserve cattle.
