Picture the life of one aircraft tire. It starts brand new, gets mounted on something like a 737-800 or A320, and immediately starts earning its keep... hundreds of brutal landings, high-speed takeoffs, heavy loads. After a while the tread is gone, but the tire isn’t scrapped. It goes to a specialized shop where they carefully buff the casing, inspect every inch , then apply and permanently bond a fresh new rubber tread layer onto it. The magic is in the casing itself... those multi-ply are engineered so the outer tread takes the punishment while the strong core stays intact. Techs retire the tire for retreading long before anything reaches the critical structural layers underneath. That’s why a single casing can safely go through 5–7 retread cycles (or more). You spend five minutes in the pool with your twin 80 tanks on, which are neutral in the water. They're pretty heavy outside of the water, but they're cumbersome on your back. You got no fins. You got a weight belt on, hands up out of the water. Yeah, it's like five pounds or something. And you tread for five minutes. And that's the whole test. Hands out of the water so you only tread with your legs, no fins, tanks on. The only way to do it realistically is imagine hopping on a bike in the gym and just sprinting until you have full muscle fatigue, hold it for like three, four minutes. It doesn't even need to go that fast, but it's constant. That's the only way to do it." "Unless you're an exceptionally talented water polo player who's mastered the art of the egg beater, where they basically have found a way to move their legs.
