Anne is the character who balances Tony in "After Life." A widow who knows grief and doesn't try to fix it, just sit with it. Gervais wrote the words, but Wilton gave them weight. Both were needed.

Why hasn’t Ricky Gervais been “cancelled” for saying women can’t have penises? No boycotts. No attempts to destroy his career. No death threats. Compare that with what happened to J. K. Rowling - who is also rich and famous. The difference? She’s a woman. I’m glad Gervais turned this into a joke. Because gender ideology is a joke - and comedy can be a powerful way to expose absurd ideas. But it’s definitely not funny that women have lost jobs, businesses and friendships - and faced abuse and threats - for saying the same thing. Some long before it became safe to laugh. Worth remembering on International Women’s Day.
