Penrith have indicated Nathan Cleary will require surgery on an open lower leg fracture in his left leg, as well as a stress fracture in his right foot. One of the most significant & complex injury situations we’ve seen this season - hopefully this helps answer a few questions.

Happened to my mate at football (worse than this) and he wasn’t back to running for 6-7 months.

You really have to feel for him here. The physical toll this sport takes on the body is insane. Wishing him the absolute best during what sounds like a massive rehab process. 💪

Pat O’Hanlon also had an ankle compound fracture in 2014 finals playing for the dogs and was forced into medical retirement as a result.

Knights successfully did what media asked for target Nathan.. snapped his ankle rubbing him out the game. Hope the grubs face another 25years without winning. Dirty grubs

That tackle on Cleary pretty much just gifted the Roosters this year's Premiership...

Good point re not assuming this a Yow Yeh type scenario right now - and hopefully that remains true. Curious though, what are other examples of players with compound fractures to lower leg similar to this?

Guess the only thing he'll be kicking now is the hospital coffee, hope the rehab squad brings a spare pair of shoes.

His own fault tbh. Why play with a stress frcture, the other leg would of been over compensating, and under stress, then hot with 100+kgs, never a chance!

Absolutely horrific. Let’s look to the positive examples, Paps managed to come back ok from his. Hopefully Nathan will be the same.

Nathan can go and watch his woman play soccer in EU now that's a plus for him.

A list of Dallas Stars injuries during the 2025-26 season: Mikko Rantanen – MCL tear at Olympics (never really got going again, would’ve been nice to have two or so more weeks rehab and had to wear a brace) – no surgery needed, he’ll have time to heal now. Oskar Back – wrist injury in October, sprained shoulder in playoffs no surgery Nathan Bastian – broke his finger – had surgery – would’ve been available 2nd round Jamie Benn – Training camp, collapsed lung and concussion Lian Bichsel - Fracture to his leg in his ankle area; sprained shoulder in game 6 Michael Bunting - Groin injury Matt Duchene – Concussion early in season, long time to recover Adam Erne – MCL sprain in December Radek Faksa – Concussion at Olympics – suffered foot laceration, messing with his foot function. Had surgery, may require further surgery – ligament cut, stepped on a skate, seeing a specialist. Thomas Harley – Broken foot, November Miro Heiskanen – Oblique tear vs. Wild (April); sprained his ankle in the playoffs Roope Hintz – Sick during Olympics, first game back double tear in his hamstring – we didn’t know the time frame because of extent of injury – close to returning, then reinjured – no surgery needed Arttu Hyry – High ankle sprain in Game 5 Nils Lundkvist - Fracture to leg and ankle – identical injury to Bichsel. Facial laceration in playoffs. Stitches inside and outside, had a concussion as well. Possibly could’ve returned Game 7 or 2nd round return Tyler Seguin – Torn ACL (Jan.)
