The error occurred because the military services used replacement costs instead of the book value of the equipment taken from Pentagon stocks and sent to Ukraine. The revised calcs indicate an error of $3.6 billion and $2.6 billion each year. Read more:

Congress required every agency to pass an annual audit by 1996. The Pentagon didn’t even try until 2018. In 2017, an MSU economist found $21 trillion in unsupported accounting adjustments on Army and Air Force ledgers from 1998 to 2015. It’s hopeless. But make sure you document your finances for the IRS.
