Facial reconstruction of a 4,000-year-old man from Ikiztepe near Samsun, Turkey The Bronze Age inhabitants of Ikiztepe were possibly of Hattic, Kaskian, or Palaic origin. The individual (SK 420, along with SK 409, another Bronze Age Ikiztepean) underwent one of the largest known trepanation surgeries in Anatolian antiquity, whether for medical or ritual purposes, and survived the procedure. He lived during a time of significant cultural and political transition, linked to the city of Zalpuwa mentioned in Hittite texts. Zalpuwa, situated in the Kaskian borderlands, served as a frontier settlement during the Hittite period. The Hattic people were pre-Indo-European natives of Anatolia who contributed a major genetic and cultural substrate to the Indo-European Hittites. The Kaskians were likely another non-Indo-European people who once inhabited Pontus and may have been related to the Hattics. Hittite sources state that the Kaskians replaced the Palaics, who are thought to have inhabited the Pontic region before them. The Palaics, on the other hand, were an Indo-European people of the Anatolian branch, related to the Luwians and the Hittites. Whether the Palaics truly predated the Kaskians in the region, with the latter arriving later from inner Anatolia, is not fully understood. During the Bronze Age collapse, the Kaskians played a role in the destruction of the Hittite Empire and then vanished from historical sources. The Pontic region was later colonized by Kartvelian groups from Colchis.
