However, if a child stays in one placement for too long, it can lead to attachment and loyalty issues. If a foster child is with one family for six months or a year, they may become comfortable and emotionally attached to that foster family. But when a birth relative reappears, the child often doesn’t want to leave. The foster parent, too, becomes attached and may be reluctant to let go of the child when a birth parent comes back. To resolve this, the foster system frequently moves children between different environments. This reduces the likelihood of loyalty conflicts or tension between foster families and birth relatives.
