Per mile charge even when I make my own fuel?

Are you repairing and maintaining the roads too? You're not paying VAT on your self-generated electricity to charge the car (good stuff), just on your usage of the roads.

cyclists should be charged 10p a metre

Yes, unless you are making your own roads as well I suppose?

As an EV driver I really don't mine the pay per mile tax. This was always going to happen. It's not about creating your own fuel and then taxing you on it. You don't create your own roads and drive on them. Ultimately, 25% of new car buyers last month were EVs. That's 25% of new car buyer not paying for fuel duty. This missing tax revenue was always going to have to be found somewhere. It wasn't going to come in the form of taxing electrics as people charge in different ways and how would you separate energy going into a car Vs home. Pay per mile is the fairest way to go. ICE will naturally die out and the majority will be in this system. Where I do think there is an issue is the cheaper pay per mile for hybrid. This will push more people to hybrids that pay fuel duty as well. Most plug-in hybrids don't plug in. With that said legacy companies are going to die off taking hybrids with them.

What’s fuel got to do with it? You use the roads. They don’t build themselves or fix themselves. Charging all vehicle users was inevitable and it’s still less than other fuel users.

So, taking into account we all need to use the road, what do people suggest would be the most fair and reasonable way to charge accordingly?

Gut feeling is it will get reversed by 2028 what about all these companies now who have EV vans a no s Lorrie’s that travel nationally

Well I don’t think anyone would want to go FROM EV back to diesel vans and pay at least twice as much tax per mile… (Petrol and diesel is already taxed at about 6pence per mile, charged at the pump. Each litre is 53p in tax and that will probably go up in September.)

I think it's pretty fair tbh, we have to fill the gap in revenue as EVs takes over from ICE. I think the double taxation effect on plug in hybrids will kill them off though.

If they are good on EV only range and used as such, then they could actually work out to be efficienct in theory.

That's a very big if though and a 70 mile range isn't really practical for business use.

Don't worry, you'll not be charge per mile while parked outside your house charging from PV on your roof... ...because, 'per mile'. The tax isn't related to how much energy you use, bought or not, it's 'per mile'. It's kinda in the name.

It's not a fuel duty, as you well know, it's a tax on your movement, If she could tax your farts I am sure she would, why aren't cyclists being taxed per mile? They aren't paying tax on fuel either!

Yeah I think it has more to do with the damage a nearly 2 ton Tesla is doing to our roads...

Sorry fella it’s over 2 years away so anything can happen so it’s literally pointless even discussing it … maybe have a read of what @timoldland has posted earlier it’s bob on …

You use the roads and heavy EVs do more damage. Now you have been compensated to change by decade long tax breaks it’s time to pay your way again. Who makes the electricity irrelevant.

My concern is more around how they track my miles - If I'm driving abroad it isn't as simple as using my MOT!

And you thought that a) you were saving the planet or b) you were saving money. Congratulations you’ve done neither. The Govt was always going to screw EV owners eventually.

Anyone with a brain cell knew this was coming . It was the same when they told everyone to switch from petrol to diesel . They will always tax cars one way or another it's easy money for the Guv.

Well you are not paying tax on the electric you generate which you would if you had an electric bill from a supplier but also feel you should be able to use the roads for free when other road users have to through road tax and tax on fuel. You have had a good run.

It's ridiculous. Funny how quiet the labour voters in the Tesla FB group are right now. They are usually so vocal

Unless your car can fly you’ll still have to use it on the road pal.

You're heavy car causes more wear and tear of the road than a normal car.

It's a road tax not a fuel tax is my understanding.

What about the weight tax? Here in the Netherlands, the weight of an EV is taxed like nuclear waste.

your electric vehicle does more damage to the roads

Do your solar panels generate your own roads as well?

but you are using the road infrastructure and apparently EVs cause more wear and tear on roads that petrol / diesel cars. Their weight apparently has an adverse impact on tar and pot holes.

Your using roads you pay tax simple. Every vehicle that uses public roads including bicycles and scooters should pay it.

If the country went 100% EV, who would pay for the roads. We've been lucky not to have to contribute till now, I think it's pretty reasonable at 3p, and it isn't being introduced for a couple of years....

In an EV you still pollute, still congest & still wear out the roads.

I want it ring fenced to actually maintain roads and help build out charging infrastructure. The fuel duty hikes were meant to facilitate transport decarbonisation but they just pissed that money up the wall to fill other budget holes. Yet another economic drag.

“We need ev cars It’s for the plant to save the children and the dolphins etc,” then as expected electricity prices sky rocket the cars now attract road tax and now you have to pay to use them. Soon they will be able turn off your car to stop you driving because you have driven your quota.

You may produce your own fuel but, you don't carry out the construction and/or repair of the roads.

But you still drive on the road. I've been paying for the upkeep of the roads every time I fill up my lawn mower and strimmer.

Remember to fit oversized tyres to all your vehicles and reduce the number of recorded miles.

they're going to charge you *especially* if you charge it from your own generation if you charge in some public charger you're already taxed dearly for that, which is why for the 40%+ without their own driveways EVs are prohibitively expensive same for regular home electricity
