Mykhailo, who is originally from Mariupol, has four children: two live in Ukraine, while two live with his ex-wife in Russia. The FSB offered Puryshev a choice: betray Ukraine and work with Russian intelligence, or risk his son’s life. Instead, he chose a third option: he went to Russia himself, putting his own freedom, safety, and potentially his life at risk in the hope of protecting his son. This is not the first time Puryshev has put himself in danger for others. During the siege of Mariupol in 2022, he repeatedly drove into the besieged city to deliver humanitarian aid and evacuate civilians. His team helped evacuate countless people under active shelling. Mykhailo’s decision says a lot about the kind of man he is: he refused to betray his country and chose to put himself in harm’s way to save his child.
