The mayor of Ichikawa City in Japan, Tanaka, has banned group prayers in a public park. For about 30 years, people from the local mosque had been performing namaz (prayers) in the nearby park. But after complaints from local residents and criticism on social media, the mayor clearly stated: “A public park is for everyone. Collective worship of any particular religion should not take place there.” Now only cultural events are allowed in the park — not prayers.
