You can't obstruct a player from getting to the base on a walk. If you could, there would be mayhem. I have a feeling MLB will clarify that PCA should have been safe due to the obstruction of the player touching him before he touched the base

Gary kept saying it makes no sense. But it perfectly makes sense. After a walk, the ball is dead UNTIL the runner reaches the second base. After that, the ball is alive. However PCA left the base because of his sliding. He was tagged out. Makes sense.

This is 101. It’s the same as overrunning a bag. You’re only protected to the base not after. Once you go beyond all bets are off. Just pretend ball 4 and he over ran 2b. That’s it. Simple.

If you can take advantage of a 3-2, 2 out count with a safe steal 99% of the time, if this is the result, so be it. This insane scenario, is the very minuscule risk you take. The 2 out scenario is honestly neither here nor there though when you think about it.

The 2nd base ump called it off “ball four”, never made a call, dead, and it was a walk which also supersedes the play regardless if he tagged him after his hand left the base. The umps way over-thought this one. Another bad call. It will come out tomorrow or Thursday. Pathetic.

That is not the spirit of the rule. In a way, I am glad this happened in such a low-leverage spot. This can’t happen anymore, especially when the game matters.

MLB really messed this up and is causing themselves to have to make a new rule about this situation. Avoid all that by coming back after review and say it was interference with the tag pushing PCA off the bag since it was a free base.

PCA was awarded 2nd base and the shortstop obstructed his advancement. He should have been called safe.
