It must be about 50 years ago that I became acquainted with the intriguing music of Peter Hammill and his Van Der Graaf Generator. Elaborate melodies and poetic and critical lyrics. And now he is performing at the BBC Proms, after two heart attacks. A fragile man, and he struggles somewhat with the song sung beautifully 56 years ago, and yet it moves me deeply.

A surreal experience to perform the Tom Bowling solo at the Last Night of the Proms yesterday as guest principal of the BBC Symphony Orchestra & Chorus under the baton of @oramsa, live on BBC One. Something I remember watching as a kid. BBC Proms 1/3

The end of Sir Andrew Davis’s Last Night of the Proms conductor speech from 1992, which he memorably sang to the music of Gilbert & Sullivan. Appearing in 132 Proms, conducting 13 First Nights and 12 Last Nights, Sir Andrew Davis will be dearly remembered by the BBC Proms.
