Peter Thiel on population collapse: “There is something very odd about a world where people are not reproducing.” “It’s probably entangled with the stagnation, the decline, pessimism about the future.” “I disagree with Elon Musk in that— I don’t think there’s some kind of magic thing you can do...

Peter Thiel on why all trends are overrated and one-of-a-kind companies are underrated Peter Thiel is asked what students should study in college. He thinks this is similar to the question “what are future trends in technology?” “What I will say about trends in technology and areas of study is that they’re probably all overrated,” Thiel explains. “When you have something that can be reduced to a buzzword, it means that a lot of people are doing it and they’re somehow inadequately differentiated in that field.” On the other hand, Thiel believes that one-of-a-kind companies that don’t easily fit into an existing narrative or trend are underrated. He gives Airbnb as an example—any existing category would miss the uniqueness of the business. “Great companies always have this one-of-a-kind attribute,” Thiel observes. And he suspects that areas of study are similar: “If you’re in a big area of study, where everyone’s studying the same thing, you’re not adequately differentiating yourself from other people… I think people are spending too much time studying the things everybody else is studying, and they’re spending too little time studying more particular things that they’re really passionate about.” Video source: Northwestern Engineering (2014)

Elon Musk: I love factories — honestly, I really do. Most people these days don’t even step inside one, but I’ve walked the line in every factory, and there’s something powerful about it. It’s not just machines, it’s people building things that actually matter. Products with real utility, products people genuinely love. That’s the magic. When you walk through Giga Berlin, the vibe hits different — it’s clean, almost beautiful in a way you wouldn’t expect from a factory. You see people focused, energized, proud of what they’re creating. We’re making cars, scaling Model Y, ramping up battery cell production… and this is just the beginning. There are so many possibilities ahead. As we push forward, especially with advancements like supervised full self-driving, this place is only going to grow into something even bigger. Honestly, I think it’s one of the coolest factories in the world — and we’re just getting started.

This is why I love Elon Musk! Elon Musk just flips the interview and tells the legacy media that they are the ones people actually hate. "Elon Musk: Perhaps some people do loathe me. That is probably true. I do not care. But as you pointed out, a quarter of a billion people follow me. I think far more people like me than dislike me. I also think far more people hate you and the media than you realize. Do you realize how despised the media is? The favorable view of journalists is around 15 percent. Interviewer: Yes, I know there is a loss of trust in journalism in the United States. There have been mistakes by journalists and by journalism, and I fully acknowledge that. But I also think the polarized environment, particularly on social media, which is fostered by the kind of things you promote on X, makes it worse. Elon Musk: I do not think so. I think the media is the problem. People loathe you far more than they loathe me, and you do not seem to realize it. Interviewer: Very few people know who I am compared with you, so I do not think we are playing the same game. Elon Musk: The media collectively is hated. Do you even realize that?"

Peter Thiel: I went to the World Economic Forum in Davos the last time in 2013, and of course, they have the same ideas as the mob. And in some ways, it is a mob. And people are there only in their capacity as representatives of corporations or of governments or of NGOs. And it really hit me: There are simply no individuals. There are no individuals in the room. There’s nobody there who’s representing themselves. And it’s this notion of the future I reject. A picture of the future where the future will be a world where there are no individuals. There are no people with ideas of their own. There’s nobody to say, this is wrong. This doesn’t make sense. And I’m going to think differently. I’m going to think for myself.

There’s something powerful about banning phones at concerts. When nobody’s filming, the whole crowd locks in—fully present, completely in sync with the artist. That kind of energy? No amount of high res footage can capture that magic! Tokyo, you are on another level! 🔥

.Elon Musk Delivers a Masterclass Takedown of Bill Gates and the "Extinctionists" “I meet many people who think that there are too many humans on Earth. This is not true. There aren't enough humans on Earth. In fact, you can fit all the humans on Earth in the city of New York on one floor.” “There are actually very few people on Earth. It's only if you live in a very dense city environment that it seems there are many people, that Earth is densely populated, but it is only densely populated in like 0.1% of the surface area.”

Peter Thiel on Elon Musk 🔊 “You know, when Elon was building both Tesla and SpaceX in the 2000s, people thought he was just really, really crazy. I think even those of us who had worked with him at PayPal, I mean, there’s this PayPal book that David Sacks and I thought of writing, and the Elon chapter was titled something like, “The Man Who Knew Nothing About Risk.” There are all these crazy Elon stories I could tell... If one of the two companies had succeeded, you would say, “Well, maybe he still got really lucky,” but when two out of two companies that people thought were completely harebrained in the 2000s, when they both succeed, man, you have to somehow reassess it, and somehow, the rest of us, somehow, are too risk averse, or there’s something about risk he knows that we don’t, or something like this.”

Peter Thiel on why the name of your startup is predictive of success or failure “This is a slight aesthetic thing that I believe in very strongly: the names of companies are often very predictive of future failure or success.” PayPal and Napster are the first example Thiel gives: “PayPal was a very friendly name — it was the friend that helps you pay. Napster was a bad name — you nap some music, you nap a kid. That sounds like a bad thing to be doing, and it’s no wonder the government then comes in and shuts the company down within a few years.” “You want to be very careful of how you name companies,” Thiel warns founders. In the context of the sharing economy, he likes Airbnb more than Uber: “Airbnb sounds very innocent like this virtual bread and breakfast — this very light, non-threatening sort of company. Uber sounds like a bad name from Germany sometime in the 1930s. What are you exactly above? Maybe the law? This is probably something that, again from a regulatory perspective, I think Airbnb is a vastly better name than Uber.” And on the social networking side, Thiel likes Facebook more than MySpace: “You can say that all these social networks involve both reading and writing… Over time, reading dominates writing. Facebook was about learning about people around you — about their real identities at Harvard. MySpace started among wannabe actors in Los Angeles, and it was about them coming up with fictional narratives around themselves and a lot of other people in LA who are generally like that. And because reading dominates writing, Facebook would ultimately dominate MySpace. There’s a certain version where the whole arc of the company and the whole product arc was implicit in the names.” Source: Mercatus Center (Apr 2015)

“If you talk about risk, let me tell you about why there’s really no risk at all.” Peter Thiel explains how Elon Musk convinced him to bet Founders Fund on SpaceX: “The internal version in Silicon Valley of both Tesla and SpaceX were that they could never succeed.” “I had a conversation with Elon about this in the summer of 2008.” “I asked him when the last successful new car company had been created in the US?” “The answer was Jeep in 1941.” “You could say, ‘There’s been no new car company in 67 years, therefore it must be very hard and you should not do it.’” “The alternate version that Elon gave was, ‘It’s been 67 years. So it’s about time for a new car company.’” “One of the tremendous advantages that Tesla and SpaceX had was that they were competing with really sclerotic businesses.” “It turned out that the fact that nobody thought it was doable, and nobody had done it in a long time, paradoxically created a big opening.”
