If anything, we should be more tolerant of founders who seem strange or extreme. Marc Andreessen’s 2 reasons for why founder-run companies are harder to disrupt “If you just look historically at many of the important technology companies of the last 50-100 years, many of them are run by their founders for decades… And a lot of it has to do with disruption.” Marc continues: “There’s this cliché of founders that a lot of people believe which is that founders are too stubborn and founders get too locked into their original idea and they can’t adapt as times change. Peter Thiel on what he doesn’t like about the Lean Startup Thiel believes there are merits to the Lean Startup, but he thinks founders today may have over-indexed on it: “I do think we tend to be dominated by a somewhat nihilistic bias where we claim not to know anything. And when you don’t know anything, you end up defaulting too much to the experimental search, A/B testing approach of ‘Let’s ask the customers.’ And I would say the problem with that is that the search space is simply way too big.” In practice, Thiel argues for a more definite view of the future: “This is an important problem that needs to be solved, and this is the set of things we have to combine in just this way to do it.” To be fair, Steve Blank—who pioneered the Lean Startup methodology—isn’t necessarily against this approach. Blank just recommends treating your assumptions as “a series of untested hypotheses.” But there’s clearly a balance between having a definite view of the future and rigorously trying to disprove your assumptions. As Thiel explains, many of the PayPal founding team’s initial assumptions were wrong: “At PayPal, our original business plan was to have payments on Palm Pilots, then it was wireless payments, then it was payments linked to email. So we had a few fairly big pivots in the first year. Peter Thiel on what he would look for if he was joining a startup Wharton professor Adam Grant asks Peter Thiel what he would look for if he was joining an early-stage startup. Thiel gives a simple response: “Do you like the people? Do you think you could become good friends with these people? That’s such a critical part for getting these things to work.” He recalls interviewing with a law firm in New York early in his career and one partner telling him: “It’s a place where everybody hates everybody else, but we all make lots of money.” The partner viewed it as an illustration of how incredibly “professional” the firm was. Peter Thiel on why the best businesses never compete: "Most people believe that capitalism and competition are synonyms. I believe capitalism and competition are antonyms." His point is simple: "A capitalist is someone who's in the business of accumulating capital. A world of perfect competition is a world where all the profits are competed away." Peter explains that the most important distinction in business is one nobody talks about enough. "There are two kinds of companies in this world. There are companies that are competitive and there are companies that have monopolies." His go-to example of a bad business? Restaurants. "Opening a restaurant is super competitive and nobody ever makes any money doing it." His example of a great business: Google. "Google has had no competition in search since 2002 when it definitively distanced itself from Microsoft and Yahoo, and it's been making enormous profits for the dozen years or so ever since." So what should founders actually aim for? "If you're a one-of-a-kind company, a happy company that's doing something different, you are a monopoly. Evan Spiegel explains why he didn’t sell Snapchat to Mark Zuckerberg for $3 billion “A lot of people in the early days told us we should sell it,” Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel recalls of the time. He tells story from the early days of the company: “I remember joining a conference call with some of our lawyers and they were saying, ‘This thing is basically going to zero,’ ‘It’s just a fad.’… And I’m like, ‘Oh hey guys.’… They didn’t know I was there because I joined a minute or two early.” But it wasn’t just their lawyers. Everyone at the time thought that the big players in social media were going to put Snapchat out of business. Yet Evan and his co-founder Bobby Murphy ignored them. They even had so much faith in his vision for the company that they turned down a reported $3 billion dollar acquisition offer from Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook. The founders were only 23 years old when Facebook reached out over email. Facebook told the young founders that they were working on a competitor called Poke and asked if they’d want to join Facebook’s growing social media portfolio after their acquisition of Instagram. But Evan and Bobby said no: “I wish I could say it was wisdom but I think Bobby and I just loved what we were doing. We loved what we were working on, and we believed in the future of it. Ultimately we were able to convince our investors too that our opportunity was much bigger over time.” Evan explains that him and his founder each taking $10 million of secondaries also played a big role: “[Our investors] did something very smart early on in a prior financing round. Bobby and I were each able to sell $10 million of stock… And that allowed us to just swing for the fences… There wasn’t that feeling of, ‘Oh no, I’m not going to be able to buy a house or have a family.’ We were like, ‘We each got $10 million bucks.
